Have you started your spring cleaning yet? It's that time of year when many of us try to take a fresh approach before summer overtakes our schedules.

At home we throw up sashes to let in warm air, and root through our drawers and closets to reduce clutter. Tax time allows us to take stock of our financial situation.

At work we can take a moment to see how far along we have come in achieving the goals we set out at the beginning of the year. Are we meeting our customers' needs? Are we maintaining compliance? How is the team performing?

A new energy often follows a harsh winter. Take advantage of that spring in your step!

Sincerely,
Ernest P. Gates Jr., RPh, FASCP, FIACP, FACA
Aligning Compliance with Business Goals
Regulation of the compounding pharmacy industry has undergone significant changes in recent years, resulting in a more complex framework of rules on the state and federal levels.

More than ever before, pharmacists and pharmacies are seeking support to assess their operations and ensure that they meet and maintain full compliance.

Gates Healthcare's Regulatory Affairs team has extensive experience in pharmacy practice, accreditation programs, and compliance procedures, and working relationships with the DEA and state and federal regulatory agencies. Our focus is on providing solutions that meet regulatory requirements while at the same time aligning with business goals.

The Regulatory Affairs team assists our clients with a wide range of consulting services, including:
  • Preparing for accreditation, certification and licensure;
  • Implementing regulatory monitoring programs;
  • Analyzing operations and staff to ensure best practices;
  • Developing effective risk management policies for controlled substances and regulated chemicals;
  • Maintaining compliance with DEA requirements;
  • Addressing issues related to disciplinary action.

Compounder Credits Cabaleiro Consult
Gates Senior Associate Joe Cabaleiro, RPh, swung into action for a compounding pharmacy that was scrambling from the loss of its lead sterile pharmacist on the eve of its PCAB accreditation survey.

"Joe cleared his schedule and, in under two days, helped us organize our materials and establish a training program to bring our new sterile pharmacist and ancillary staff up to speed," said David Miller, RPh, president of Millers Compounding & Homecare Pharmacy in Wyckoff, N.J.

Miller said the PCAB surveyor commented that the pharmacy was the best prepared independently owned compounder he had surveyed in many years.

Did You Know?
Pharmacists are increasingly performing patient care-related services, according to a recent survey by the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy.

The survey found that in 2014, 60 percent of pharmacists provided medication therapy management, while 53 percent performed immunizations. That compares to only 13 percent and 15 percent, respectively, a decade ago.

Over the same period, the amount of time that pharmacists spent on medication dispensing dipped from 55 percent to 49 percent, according to the AACP.
