A seal of approval provides considerable cachet to a product or service, especially when the sealer, so to speak, is recognized as the standard-bearer of an industry.

In pharmacy compounding -- where compliance with complex state and federal regulations and USP standards is vital to ensuring patient safety, public confidence, reimbursement rules and, ultimately, business success -- the standards for quality are reinforced through the PCAB Accreditation.

Compounders take great pride in their hard-earned accreditation. Physicians and patients alike look for the PCAB logo when choosing a compounding pharmacy. It is a bona fide seal of approval.

That's why I am thrilled to announce the appointment of compounding pharmacy veteran, former PCAB Executive Director, and longtime colleague Joe Cabaleiro to lead the accreditation services for Gates Healthcare Associates. Joe's appointment as a Senior Associate is detailed below. You might say that bringing into the fold a pharmacist with such tremendous expertise in compounding standards represents, well, a seal of approval.

If you would like more information about our accreditation services, please don't hesitate to contact me or a member of the Gates Healthcare team.

Sincerely,
Ernest P. Gates Jr., R.Ph, FASCP, FIACP, FACA
Cabaleiro Joins Gates Healthcare Team
JOE CABALEIRO, R.Ph.
Joe Cabaleiro, R.Ph., has joined the Gates Healthcare Associates team of consultants as a Senior Associate.

Mr. Cabaleiro, a pharmacist for more than 30 years and a nationally recognized expert on compounding standards and operations, will lead the firm's accreditation services. He founded a compounding pharmacy in North Carolina that provided sterile medications to the state's top hospitals, and contributed significantly to the creation of the Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation Board. His pharmacy was among the first to receive PCAB accreditation.

Mr. Cabaleiro previously served as Executive Director of PCAB and Associate Director of Pharmacy at the Accreditation Commission for Health Care, which now administers the PCAB Accreditation program. He has written extensively about home infusion and compounding pharmacies.

Did You Know?
Sometimes it seems like pharmacy robberies are more common than bank robberies, especially given the recent headlines about our nation's painful opioid addiction crisis. While pharmacy robberies are, in fact, fewer in number, they remain a significant concern to pharmacists and law enforcement.

Of course, the prevalence of such criminal activity depends on where you live. Here are the top 10 states for pharmacy robberies, based on 2013 data from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency:

1. Arizona (77)
2. Indiana (71)
3. California (60)
4. Pennsylvania (41)
5. Tennessee (37)
6. North Carolina (33)
7. Massachusetts (30)
8. Ohio (28)
9. Texas (24)
10. Washington (23)

The good news is that the overall nationwide rate of pharmacy robberies fell by about 4 percent last year, thanks to pharmacies improving staff training, partnering with local law enforcement, and enhancing security features such as silent alarms and surveillance cameras.
