"I thought I was going to die," says Howard Crawford about the lowest point in his journey with hepatitis C. "I planned for it. I even paid for my cremation."

The liver is the largest internal organ in the body, but it's not well understood. For Howard Crawford and Fiona Ma, their forms of hepatitis were a wake-up call and a reason to become advocates for testing. Learn more about Howard and Fiona's personal stories in the May issue of Hill Health, available at the Hill Physicians booth in the Healthy Living Pavilion or online at HillPhysicians.com/HillHealth

Hill Physicians is pleased to support educational, testing and vaccination efforts that help prevent the spread of Hepatitis.

We are the largest Independent Physician Association (IPA) in California. Our network of 3,800 primary care doctors and specialists provide care for some 300,000 members who have health insurance coverage through HMO, Medicare Advantage or Managed Medi-Cal plans. So once you select your insurance coverage, you also want to be sure that your physician is with Hill Physicians.

Hill Health Magazine's summer cover story is about the ABCs of hepatitis and features the story of Fiona Ma, former speaker pro tem of the California State Assembly. Pick up a free copy of the magazine at the Hill Physicians booth in the Healthy Living Pavilion.

Healthcare is bigger than what happens within the four walls of an exam room or in a hospital. It starts with something as simple as the personal relationship you have with your doctor and becomes more powerful as you use support tools that help you decide what's right for you and also empower you to express your preferences. Healthcare is now a team effort. So we are working to improve the experience as you move from your doctor's office to the hospital and then return back home safely.

As you think about your own care, we encourage you to get to know your doctor, to ask questions and to be an active partner when making healthcare choices.  To help, we've introduced Shared Decision Making tools that help you evaluate various healthcare choices and prepare you for a more informed conversation with your doctor (HillPhysicians.com/Decisions), increased our team of bilingual Customer Service Coordinators, began publishing Hill Health magazine in simplified Chinese and in Spanish, and recently launched multilingual support sites to better serve non-English-speaking members. And we are just getting started.

If you'd like more confidence in your family's care, choose your physician through Hill Physicians (HillPhysicians.com/Directory)

Putting Viral Hepatitis on Notice: A 7 Year legacy

By Joseph Domingo and Genevieve Jopanda

Awareness of the viral hepatitis within Asian Pacific Islander (API) communities and others has grown significantly since the provocative ads during the Spring of 2010. The 'Who Deserves to Die?" media campaign has stirred efforts to increase screening, advocacy, and progressive health policies. Activities since then has lead to an increase in screening, awareness, and wider advocacy within API communities within the San Francisco-Bay Area and beyond. Significant progress in the campaigns history has extended into the extension of funding for screenings by the CDC, and the support from local, state, and federal officials. Notably, US Congressman Mike Honda and his congressional members legislative efforts and their formation of the Congressional Hepatitis Caucus.
