September 2018
Greetings Friend!

I live in Northern California, smack in the middle of the two fires that make up the Mendocino Complex fire, the largest one ever in California. The month of August was filled with anxiety, evacuation warnings and the suffocating layer of smoke that followed once danger had passed.

My family is fortunate not to lose our home but all of us have lost our innocence - the innocence of believing that life can be predictable and relatively safe. I imagine that most people in this country now know someone who has been impacted by a climate disruption, whether it be fire, flood, hurricane or a killer heat wave. This is the first election where climate disasters will play a role. It's essential that we ask all candidates what actions they will take to address this once elected. The Candidates Pledge Climate Action initiative is the perfect tool for engaging candidates in this important conversation. For the sake of our grandchildren, future generations, all life and all vulnerable elders, I hope you'll join us in this effort.

For the grandchildren, future generations and all life,

HAPPY GRANDPARENTS DAY!
Honor Your Grandchildren by Making a Dedicated Donation to ECA.

Let’s work together to protect our grandchildren’s future by donating to ECA and helping to build a movement of elders committed to climate action. Your contribution, no matter how small, will be used to build resources, tools and actions that you can use from your own home and in your own community. Together we can bring the voice of the elders to the climate action conversation and ensure that elders are taking action on their grandchildren’s future.

We can make a difference by building political will through our collective voice and vote. Working together we can curb the tide of climate change.
ECA Webinars Were a Huge Success!
ECA Elders do not take a break from climate action during the summer, we spend the time becoming engaged and inspired by participating in the ECA Summer webinar series. There were four outstanding webinars during the months of July and August which were very well attended. For those of you who were unable to join the webinars for the live presentation ECA is making them available for everyone to watch at their leisure.
Watch the ECA Webinar Series: Elders Standing for a Just and Sustainable World Video Recordings on our Website or the ECA YouTube Channel.
A special Thank You to all of our presenters who made the webinar series possible. Presenters included: Heather Booth speaking on Our Elder Role in Standing for Social and Environmental Justice; Former South Carolina Congressman Bob Inglis speaking on Communicating with Conservatives; Nathaniel Stinnett, Founder and Executive Director of the Environmental Voter Project speaking on the Environmental Voters; World renowned climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe speaking about the climate science and ways elders can move forward.

Each of our webinars was paired with ECA leaders sharing, experiences, strategies and tools to make it easy for all elders to begin taking action on climate change. We hope you have enjoyed the webinar series and that you will join us for future “National Calls” and informal “Climate Tea and Talk” calls both of which will be held monthly. Check our website frequently and watch for bulletin reminders so you can join us on the calls.

Cost of Carbon Capture: Can Young People Bear the Burden?
by James Hansen

“The urgency and scope of the climate issue is not new. Major alteration of global energy use or carbon capture can occur only on a timescale of decades to a century. In view of our long-standing knowledge of the threat posed by climate change, we find it morally repugnant and reprehensible that we, the older generations, have not developed, tested, and costed the known technological options for addressing climate change, so that today’s young people and future generations will have viable options for addressing climate change.”

How We Talk About Climate Change Video — with Bill McKibben ( courtesy of the Saunders Institute)

What are the most effective weapons in the fight against the climate crisis? New energy sources? New technology? Political action? One of the most powerful tools we have is the language we use to talk about the issue.
