EDItion July 2013
Message from the President

Dear EDI Customers and Industry Partners,

We hope all of you are enjoying your summer season wherever you might be. For those of you that will be attending the 50th Annual ASHE conference next week here in Atlanta, welcome to Hotlanta! We look forward to seeing you here.

Recently, I attended the SE Critical Access Hospital Conference hosted by Hometown Health in Savannah, GA. I learned a great deal about the challenges faced by CAH's during these uncertain times. Many face the very real threat of closure leaving many in rural and under served areas with little or no access to care. One of the toughest jobs today is to be a hospital CEO and the toughest of the tough is to be a critical access hospital CEO. I applaud their efforts in these difficult times.

We welcome two new Associates to the EDI team. David Zigman joined our team in Denver and Michael Cherfane joined our team in Atlanta. David and Michael are great additions to EDI and we are delighted to have them with us.

In the stories that follow, we focus on two very important elements of any data center environment today - infrastructure monitoring (DCIM) and energy efficiency. EDI can help you with both of these important elements to ensure a successful data center strategy. We also highlight our experience with a large and successful IPD project for Maine General using advanced BIM technology.

Please don't hesitate to call if there is anything with which we can help you. We appreciate your business and look forward to continuing our relationship as your trusted advisor.

Don Kinser, PE, MBA, CPHIMS

Chairman, President & CEO

Building MaineGeneral with IPD

Jan Stuchlik

By Jan Stuchlik , PE

Vice President

MaineGeneral Health will move into their new Alfond Center for Health in about 4 months.  The 640,000-square-foot, four-story hospital will house 192 private patient rooms, a helipad, a streamlined emergency department, 10 operating rooms, a medical library and meeting space for up to 300 people. This $322 Million project was designed and constructed using the Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) method. We delivered our services as a fully integrated member of the IPD team (even though we are not contractually a part of the mutual teaming agreement) since November of 2010. While IPD offers many benefits to the project team and ultimately the hospital, anyone considering an IPD approach needs to understand the potential shortcomings.

DCPro: Get the Most Out of Your Data Center

Dan Fanning

By Dan Fanning, LEED AP BD+C, DC CEP, HCC

Project & Engineering Manager - Data Center Practice

A few years ago, I became a Department of Energy Data Center Certified Energy Practitioner. The CEP program is meant to help data center owners and operators get professional help improving the efficiency of their facilities. The program uses trained industry professionals and software developed by the Department of Energy to help Data Center owners and operators identify their energy use and provide recommendations for energy efficient opportunities.

Typically, this process involves a CEP like me guiding the data center operator through the complex world of data center interdependencies. But the DOE's Save Energy Now program has a software tool called the Data Center Profiler or DCPro that is free and can be used by anyone in your organization.
