We are excited about the upcoming ELUM Professional Development Program in Denver in Jan 2017 and hope to see many of you there!  We are planning a session for that meeting on how we are carrying on the legacy of ELAM and ELATE at our home institutions. In preparation, we would like to learn about programming that you may have developed. Please let us hear from you by taking 10 minutes to complete this brief survey   and tell us about your programs. We will collate the information and use it to develop the session. We will also share it with all who respond and wish to receive the information. Thank you in advance for your contribution to our efforts.

If you have any questions, please contact  Ann Brown at [email protected] .

Thank you!

Articles of Note

The Atlantic, August 17, 2016:
A Hillary Clinton presidential victory promises to usher in a new age of public misogyny.

Inside Higher Ed, September 7, 2016:
New study provides evidence that when those reviewing panel submissions see a woman's name, she is less likely to be invited than if no name is seen.

Fast Company, September 8, 2016:
Research shows listeners tend to have a bias against female voices, even when they're saying the same thing as a man

AAMC CFAS News, September 9, 2016:
An article in the New York Times told the story of Princeton University neuroscientist Yael Niv, PhD, and her effort to use data to fight underrepresentation of women on science panels. According to the piece, Dr. Niv and a group of female colleagues have created the website BiasWatchNeuro, which features gender ratios among speakers at more than 60 conferences in various areas of neuroscience and "compares them with the base rates-the proportion of female scientists in that particular field."

Fast Company, September 12, 2016:
Women are more likely to take command in collaborative work environments-including those that are predominantly male.

Forbes, September 12, 2016:
Abelio is the CMO of a US Fortune 500 company. When his sister was diagnosed with a serious illness, Abelio decided to relocate to Colombia to help her. He had the full support of his CEO and his team for the move. But managing an organization, dealing with his peers and customers across international borders and managing his mostly US-based team remotely left him overwhelmed.
Abelio is not alone. The C-suite executives I coach have a long list of things to worry about, such as board demands, talent losses, competitors and the safety of employees traveling in areas of recent violence, not to mention a full calendar. Teasing out meaningful activities can be tough if stress and fear control your attention and calendar.
Break fear's grip by leaning into its opposite: joy.

The Cut, September 13, 2016:
When President Obama first took office, the White House wasn't exactly the friendliest place for female staffers. Most of Obama's senior staffers - such as former chief of staff Rahm Emanuel and former economic adviser Lawrence Summers - were men who'd worked on his campaign and subsequently filled his cabinet.
"If you didn't come in from the campaign, it was a tough circle to break into," Anita Dunn, who served as White House communications director until November 2009, told  the Washington Post. "Given the makeup of the campaign, there were just more men than women."

U.S. News & World Report, September 19, 2016:
Five ways women can elevate each other through peer-to-peer sponsorship.

The Chronicle of Higher Education, Academe Today, September 20, 2016:
Well, it's OK to be courted for a leadership role in academe, but don't let anyone see you actually pursue one.

Calls for Application, Nomination, Etc.

Page Morahan, Founding Director, ELAM, encourages ELUMs to take advantage of two opportunities. "I think Susan Madsen, Professor of Leadership and Ethics, Utah Valley University has one of the most useful clearinghouses about gender and leadership (contact [email protected] to subscribe to her monthly email). And the International Leadership Association's Women and Leadership Affinity Group is organizing its 3rd international conference for June 2017. I think this would be a great place to showcase all the work that you all have been doing, and to connect with like-minded people and garner additional ideas!" Call for Submissions for 3rd Biennial ILA Women & Leadership Conference, theme "Advancing Women in Leadership: Cultivating Our Whole Selves," June 11-14, 2017, Omega Institute, Rhinebeck, NY. Check out conference details here and see the variety of sessions you can submit: symposiums, panels, workshops, fireside chats, etc. Sally Helgesen (author of "The Female Advantage") will be opening keynote speaker.
