ELAM News

In Memory of D. Walter Cohen, DDS

It is with heavy hearts that we dedicate this issue of the  ELAM Edge to the memory of  D. Walter Cohen, DDS, chancellor emeritus of Drexel University College of Medicine, and a co-founder of ELAM. Dr. Cohen passed away on June 29, 2018.

ELAM receives the 2004 American Dental Association's Dr. Edward B. Shils Entrepreneurial Education Fund Award. L to R: Edward Shils, Page Morahan, D. Walter Cohen, and Rosalyn Richman
Dr. Cohen helped
blaze the trail for women leaders in academic medicine and beyond. From Page Morahan, founding director of ELAM: "Walter was the driving force for ELAM. When he became president of the then Medical College of Pennsylvania (MCP), he felt that our legacy as the first medical school for women was a hidden pearl that he wanted to shine light on. I will never forget the exhibit he sponsored, showing the history, and ending up with a very insightful (and troubling) last panel. It showed that MCP had produced most of the women physicians in the early 1900s, they were a significant proportion of the physician work force and were leaders of their local and state medical groups. However, by the mid-1900s, the proportion of women practicing medicine in the U.S. was actually LESS than it was earlier in the century. About that time, Walter and Patty Cormier began working with the Jessie Ball duPont Fund to start the ELAM program."
Walter Cohen, far left, presents Lorraine Fitzpatrick, far right, with her ELAM graduation certificate at the graduation of the first ELAM class in 2016. Also pictured, center left, Page Morahan, and center right, Rosalyn Richman.

Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) was launched in 1995 with a class of 25 fellows.  In the nearly 25 years that ELAM has been in existence, more than 1,000 women have graduated from the program and have ascended to leadership positions at institutions around the world.

By bringing ELAM into the world, Walter Cohen made a concrete, measurable impact on the number of women in academic leadership positions. His important work with ELAM led to the development of its sister program, ELATE, for senior women faculty in academic engineering, computer science, and other science fields.

As Nancy Spector, executive director of ELAM explains, "ELAM lost one of its brightest lights when it lost D. Walter Cohen. Dr. Cohen was a visionary leader who changed the conversation around women in leadership in academic medicine. His impact can't be overestimated. But beyond that, he was one of the most brilliant, humble and kind people I have known. His loss will be deeply felt by the ELAM and academic healthcare community."

We send our deepest condolences to his family.

Articles of Note

Harvard Business Review, May 25, 2018:
We like to think of ourselves as unbiased and objective in our employment decisions, but with two equal candidates, who are you going to promote? Someone who is described in their performance evaluations as analytical or someone who is described as compassionate? On the other end of the employment spectrum, if you're downsizing and have to fire someone and the two people in jeopardy are very similar, who are you going to fire? Someone perceived as arrogant or someone perceived as inept? Leadership attributions in performance evaluations are powerful.

New England Journal of Medicine, June 14, 2018:
As a new generation advances through medicine, the number of physicians who use social media and online networks as primary vehicles for communication is growing. Of course, the young physician workforce was brought up with online networks, but more and more mid- and late-career physicians in academic medicine and beyond are also communicating with one another through these platforms. Social media can both facilitate near-instantaneous communication across states and continents and help support trainees and physicians of all genders, races, cultures, specialties, and institutional affiliations.

Harvard Business Review, June 15, 2018:
Executive Summary. A boss who doesn't advocate for you can stunt your growth and block your career opportunities. And you might not even know that you have an unsupportive boss.

Linked In, June 15, 2018:
Most organizations overlook or don't fully grasp the impact of culture on performance. One of our primary objectives is to help leaders understand their culture for what it is and to be able to identify what they want it to be while working to fiercely protect what must never change.
Most consultants focus on identifying a slew of problems and then working to correct them. In using our process, leaders are able to emphasize positivity and focus on what is while setting expectations of what can be. When we return to our shared identity, values, and traditions, it helps us connect through what is shared and similar rather than disconnect through what is different and troublesome.

AAMC CFAS News, June 22, 2018:
Keck School of Medicine's first woman dean, Laura Mosqueda, MD, is working to rehabilitate the institution's image and steer it in a new direction, reported California Healthline. "I think [my appointment as dean] signals a sea of change at USC," said Dr. Mosqueda. "I think as a woman I'm probably more likely to bring a less competitive and more collaborative, more nurturing approach. I think we women are tough in different ways."

Harvard Business Review, June 25, 2018:
It's a concrete fact that women earn less than men do. The true gender pay-gap is not known with certainty, but, when comparing equally qualified people doing the same job, most estimates by labor economists put it at 10% - 20%. The crucial question remains its cause. One common explanation is that women are less likely to negotiate their salaries. We've seen this in both bestselling business memoirs like Sheryl Sandberg's Lean In and in previous studies like the research-based Women Don't Ask.

Inside Higher Ed, June 26, 2018:
Dysfunctional departments have identifiable patterns, and faculty members share some responsibility for dealing with them, argue Nicholas C. Burbules, C. K. Gunsalus and Robert A. Easter.

True diversity remains a struggle for many colleges. This special report looks at who actually sets a college's diversity agenda, and what makes that agenda flourish or flop.
