Articles of Note
The American Association of University Women, Fall 2016:
You've probably heard that men are paid more than women are paid over their lifetimes. But what does that mean? Are women paid less because they choose lower-paying jobs? Is it because more women work part time than men do? Or is it because women have more caregiving responsibilities? And what, exactly, does gender bias have to do with paychecks?
AAUW's The Simple Truth about the Gender Pay Gap succinctly addresses these issues by going beyond the widely reported 80 percent statistic. The report explains the pay gap in the United States; how it affects women of all ages, races, and education levels; and what you can do to close it. For 2016, the fifth anniversary of The Simple Truth, we've updated the report with information on disability status, sexual orientation, and gender identity.
Linked In Pulse, September 15, 2016:
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella famously advised women to have faith in the system instead of asking for a raise. He said there's "good karma" for women who don't ask for a raise, because "that's the kind of person that I want to trust. That's the kind of person I want to really give more responsibility to." He apologized later for the comments. But taken at face value, they give us clues into the vexing puzzle of women, work and money.
Inc., September 20, 2016:
How to save time in meetings and be even more productive.
Inside Higher Ed, September 21, 2016:
In changing times, our campuses need not only individual leaders but also a collective environment of leadership, writes Judith S. White.
Fast Company, September 23, 2016:
More women are investing in each other's success, writes Sallie Krawcheck, putting gender parity in closer reach than ever before.
Fast Company Leadership, September 25, 2016:
The people in your office may not trust you as much as you think they do. Here's how to win them over.
Fast Company, September 28, 2016:
Even in industries known for insane hours, you can have a personal life if you're smart about your time.

The Last Word
AAMC CFAS News, September 23, 2016: And finally, you know awards season is upon us when you hear that the 26th Annual Ig Nobel Prize Ceremony has occurred. Among this year's winners was a German team that studied the role mirrors play in scratching an itch (as in, an itch on the left side of your body can be relieved by watching yourself in the mirror as you scratch the right side of your body) and two researchers whose work led to one of them wearing prosthetics that allowed him to live as a goat in the wild (and as a badger, otter, deer, fox, and bird). We're sure he tweeted about it.
