It's time to apply
to be a GA commissioner
 Applications are now being accepted for the 223rd General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) slated next summer, June 16-23, in St. Louis. The Presbytery of the Twin Cities Area will send two ruling elders and two teaching elders as commissioners, and a young adult advisory delegate -- age 17-23. The application deadline is Sept. 15. United Seminary offers early-bird rate
for certificate in the arts, spirituality
 United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities is once again offering a certificate in the arts and spirituality for spiritual and religious leaders. The program begins this fall. Applications received by Aug. 11 receive a $200 reduction in the enrollment fee. The deadline for all applications is Sept. 5. In the seventh installment of Theological Conversations for 2017, the Theology, Formation and  Evangelism ministry of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) presents "Seeking a Correctable Conscience" by John L. Thompson of Fuller Theological Seminary. "Seeking a Correctable Conscience," with the provocative subheading, "Here I stand ... but d'you mind checking my exegesis," looks closely at those famous words attributed to Martin Luther during the Reformation. Bruxvoort Colligan offers 'Songwriting with the Psalms' webinar
 Richard Bruxvoort Colligan, well-known Christian songwriter, will present a 90-minute webinar titled "Songwriting with the Psalms" next week Tuesday, Aug. 8, at 1 p.m. CDT. The webinar will focus on the spirituality of the Psalms and the value of sung prayer. Participants will look at three Psalm texts and write a simple community song for each of them: a song of celebration, a song of wonder and a lament. Details can be found at "Songwriting."

Nelson speaks out on proposed transgender ban in military
 J. Herbert Nelson II, stated clerk of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), responded last week to President Trump's proposal to ban transgender individuals from serving in the U.S. armed forces. Nelson noted the PC(USA) "stands with transgender community members, affirms their sacredness -- as they are created in the image of God -- and asserts their deservedness of a dignified and respectful work environment." PC(USA) Public Witness office calls Presbyterians to fall event in Washington
The Presbyterian Mission Agency's Office of Public Witness is calling Presbyterians across the denomination to come to Washington, D.C., this fall to speak out on the proposed federal budget. Church members, presbyteries and synods are being asked to gather on Sept. 12 for a budget briefing, press conference and a visit to congressional offices. "When I visit churches, I get a sense that people want to make a statement. There is a lot of frustration about the direction the country is headed and I sense that people want to come and make their voices heard," said the Rev. Jimmie Hawkins, OPW director.
