BYSO hosts the Leipzig choirs for this special celebration as part of a new international residency and exchange initiative. In June, BYSO musicians will travel to Leipzig, Germany to perform at Bachfest , the world’s foremost annual festival focusing on the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and his contemporaries. Performances will be held at the Leipzig market square and the prestigious Gewandhaus concert hall.

Catherine Weiskel, BYSO's Executive Director stated: “We are delighted to have the opportunity to create such a culturally enriching experience for our musicians both in Boston and in Leipzig. In today’s world it is ever more important to understand and experience other cultures, values and history. To gain such an experience through music making is something that will have a lasting impact on our students for the rest of their lives."

WHY BYSO? Participating in BYSO has given me countless opportunities. The community that is formed between musicians and even across ensembles is truly unique to BYSO, and creating music with like-minded youth has proven to be an invaluable experience for me, as I have met some of my closest friends here. Not only this, but after each concert, I feel an overwhelming sense of accomplishment and pride in both myself and the orchestra. I am extremely lucky to have been able to gain such an experience, and I believe you can’t find this anywhere else.

The Massachusetts Music Education Association (MMEA) is a federated state unit of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME). MMEA supports comprehensive, quality music education for all students through advocacy, professional development for teachers, opportunities for student performance in District and All-State Festivals, and grants awarded to students. Students audition for acceptance in junior or senior festivals organized by each of the five MMEA districts. Based on their audition scores, a percentage of students are invited to audition in January for the All-State Festival. Approximately 1,000 students audition annually, and about half are accepted to participate in the All-State Festival.
