BYSO's E-Newsletter: January 2017
Opera is an essential part of the BYSO experience. Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras (BYSO) believes that performing opera repertoire provides a deep musical and intellectual experience for young musicians and young audiences alike. It is a critical element in the training, understanding and appreciation of the full range of classical repertoire that is often overlooked in the musical training of young players. In 2008, under the direction of BYSO Music Director, Federico Cortese, BYSO students performed their first semi-staged opera: Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte . Since then, opera has become an integral part of BYSO’s season repertoire and a critically-acclaimed cornerstone of our concert season.

MOVING MLK TRIBUTE CONCERT!

Last week on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, students from BYSO's Intensive Community Program performed as part of the annual MLK Jr. Tribute Celebration at Boston 's historic Faneuil Hall. Each year BYSO partners with the City of Boston and the Museum of African American History to celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King.

This year proved exceptionally moving with a standing room only crowd and opening words from Mayor Walsh and keynote speaker, Dr. Evelyn Brookes Higginbotham.  BYSO alumnus, Sebastien Ridore ('15) took part in the occasion reading words of King to the packed hall. The joyous afternoon culminated with everyone singing "We Shall Overcome" led by BYSO/ICP parent, Pierre Grady Fontaine, as the hall was hand in hand and ICP musicians performed.  Mayor Walsh remained to congratulate the musicians and to take a photo as seen below.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
A Conversation with David Jones '85, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. David “Dave” Jones, Ph.D., has a story that speaks to a vast majority of musicians, namely the pursuit of a profession outside the arts, but a profession shaped by his experience within the arts; Dave is currently the Chief of Dermatology at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. As a youth growing up in Alabama and later Boston, Dave found the culture of wind instrument performance to be strong and appealing, picking up the French horn at an early age. He continued to perform throughout childhood and high school. However, after accepting a position in medical school, he found it difficult to continue to play his horn, putting it away but never selling. After a 12-year hiatus, he felt the urge to play again and has since kept his horn occupied; Dave plays regularly with the New Philharmonia Orchestra in Newton. Dave was adamant to spread the word among BYSO alumni, “It is never too late to pick back up your instrument. It is never too late to feel that sense of accomplishment and expressiveness again!”

Last year Dave’s son David graduated from the BYSO program, having played oboe in several of our orchestras for four years. The shared experience of going through the BYSO program has meant a great deal to Dave and his family. Primarily, the BYSO experience has instilled a sense of accomplishment, of becoming acquainted with success, and has instilled in them the confidence to tackle any discipline at a high level.

In addition to giving back to BYSO financially, Dave has been serving on the BYSO Council, a group of engaged community members who encourage and support various BYSO efforts and projects.
