COMPOSER ROBERT BEASER '72
Joins BYSO Board of Directors
|
|
Ten years after BYSO commissioned alumnus Robert Beaser, '72 to write a piece for the 50th anniversary, he gives back again to BYSO and joins the Board of Directors at the start of BYSO's 60th anniversary season. BYS premiered Beaser's commissioned work,
Evening Prayer,
at Harvard’s Sanders Theatre on June 15, 2008. At the time of the performance Beaser wrote, “BYSO is the first orchestra I ever played in…I have chosen to give back to this orchestra a piece with the weight and seriousness of purpose of the experience that shaped me as an aspiring musician some 35 years ago.”
Robert Beaser is the artistic director of the American Composers Orchestra and was music director and conductor of Musical Elements from 1978 to 1989. In 1977 he became the youngest composer to win the Prix de Rome from the American Academy in Rome. In 1986, Beaser’s
Mountain Songs
was nominated for a Grammy Award. He has received fellowships from the Guggenheim and Fulbright Foundations, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Goddard Lieberson Fellowship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, a Charles Ives Scholarship, an ASCAP Composers Award, a Nonesuch Commission Award and a Barlow Commission. In 1995 the American Academy of Arts and Letters honored him with its lifetime achievement award, the Academy Award in music. Born in Boston, Beaser holds a BA from Yale College,
summa cum laude
; and MM, MMA, and DMA degrees from the Yale School of Music. He studied composition with Jacob Druckman, Toru Takemistu, and Goffredo Petrassi. He has been a member of the Juilliard faculty since 1993 and chair of the composition department since 1994.
We are grateful for Mr. Beaser's continued dedication to BYSO and look forward to his important new role as a member of the Board of Directors. Pictured above, Robert Beaser and BYSO Music Director, Federico Cortese, after BYSO's performance of

CONGRATULATIONS
BYSO Concerto Competition Winners
|
|
In October BYSO held its annual Concerto Competition for members of Repertory Orchestra and Boston Youth Symphony and we are delighted to announce the following winners:
Boston Youth Symphony
Winner: Emily Qiu, Bassoon. Concerto in F Major - Weber
|
|
"My experiences with BYSO have influenced me in many ways, but most of all, they’ve pushed me to step outside of my comfort zone - to play out and make my voice heard. Being part of such a high-caliber group is often demanding, and as a result, I’ve been able to develop more confidence in myself and my abilities as a player. Whether it’s a bad reed day, rough rehearsal, or anything in between, BYSO has taught me to face every challenge head on, which has definitely been an important skill in my life."
- Emily Qiu, Bassoon, BYS Concerto Competition Winner

Repertory Orchestra
Winner: Liam Barthelmy, Violin. Concerto for Violin in E minor, mvt. 1 - Mendelssohn
|
|
"BYSO has given me the incredible opportunity to play music every week with a high level orchestra, both as an ensemble member and now as a soloist! BYSO also has a great community which has connected me with many other kids who share my love of music. The thing I love most about BYSO is the way it constantly challenges both my technical and ensemble skills in a way that I’ve never been challenged before, and the incredible feeling when performing the beautiful music that we have worked on for so long
."

BYSO Celebrates 60th Anniversary
and Milestone White House Performance at
JFK Presidential Library and Museum
|
|
On Friday, October 27, the Bravo Circle hosted a special commemorative event as part of BYSO's 60th Anniversary at the JFK Presidential Library and Museum. Taking part in the John F. Kennedy Bicentennial celebration, BYSO honored the legacy of the President, who launched BYSO to national recognition as a model music education program with his invitation to perform at the White House in 1962. A turning point in BYSO's history, this milestone opportunity directly impacted BYSO's growth and success, and continues to remain an important piece of its legacy. A performance by BYSO's Chamber Quartet was followed by remarks from Music Director Federico Cortese. Mr. Cortese spoke about the keen insight Kennedy had into the musical landscape of America, particularly music education. As an advocate of high quality arts education for America's students, Kennedy valued its youth orchestras as a national treasure. Federico went on to stress how music education not only has practical benefits for youth, but also teaches resilience, manifests freedom, and inspires the pursuit of beauty.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
KATIE SCHEELE '97
FROM BYSO TO
MOZART IN THE JUNGLE
AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN
|
|
It is a rare experience to enter music school and think, “I want to play for HBO documentaries, award-winning Amazon originals, play my instrument in a gas mask with Matthew Barney for an audience including Björk, and travel the world with contemporary music ensembles!” But not for Katie Scheele. She is a unique and entrepreneurial classical musician, and has quite the story to share!
Katie is a ‘97 BYSO (then GYBSO) alum, having played oboe in the orchestras for two years. She grew up in Rhode Island and was intrigued by music from an early age, starting oboe in 6
th
grade. Her school was dedicated to music education, which encouraged her to soar into the upper ranks of musical excellence across the state, playing in all-state and youth orchestras in Rhode Island. But Katie wanted more in her musical experience, which is what brought her up to Boston.
