Chamber Benefits

Rorie Johnston

You are all aware of the headlines regarding lack of housing, and more importantly, affordable housing in San Diego County. Just to break ground on a new project can take 10 years to get through the legal, environmental and permitting process.

Did you know that there are incentives for developing high density housing? The intent and concept are interesting. Make it easy to development and in exchange, the developer designates a portion of their investment to low income and affordable housing projects.

There is a lot more to this law. Considering the housing trends, it is a subject that you may wish to understand.

Here is an outline about the  Density Bonus Law that I found quite helpful.

Of course, this is not a one size fits all approach to housing. Having a multitude of options is best as people's needs change. Living in a studio is great, until the kids come. Then most families look for the suburban home with a yard in a good school district.

I bring this up as Escondido is in the midst of a multitude of projects in various stages of development. Understanding what tools a developer has to work with, how a project will impact the existing community or what it takes to "pencil out" helps us evaluate what is being proposed.

Sincerely,

Rorie Johnston

Escondido Chamber of Commerce's Rising Stars!

girl-book-sm.jpg
The Escondido Chamber of Commerce has a long history of involvement with our youth, who will be the next business leaders, innovators and problem solvers. From the development of the MAP Program, guaranteeing admission to Cal State University San Marcos, to raising support for the PAL (Police Athletic League) who work hand in hand with at risk youth.

This Fall, we will be launching a new program, honoring High School students who serve the community called "Rising Star Student of the Month". Each month, a senior student who is chosen by their teacher, counselor or principal from the Escondido Union High School District will be honored and encouraged by their parents and the chamber at a breakfast event.  By April 2018, we will have honored 49 seniors.

We are reaching out to you to be a part of this program:
  • Swag bag items (total of 50)
  • Sponsor a Breakfast
  • Fund a scholarship (total of 7 scholarships awarded per year)

Scholarships will be presented to one student from each school, at the annual Grand Ave Festival on May 20, 2018. The scholarships awarded will depend on the amount of funding raised from people like you. It is our wish to provide a $1,000.00 scholarship to each of the seven students.

We would greatly appreciate your participation! The chamber is relying on the community to support this event, from breakfast sponsors to swag bag donations to funding the scholarships.

EUSD SVPR Communication

The Escondido Union School District (EUSD) is pleased to announce the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Math and Science Building at Mission Middle School on Thursday, September 14, 2017, at 3:00 p.m.

The $7.5 million, 16,884 square foot, state-of-the-art Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) facility has six classrooms, four science labs, two project rooms, and two instructor collaboration rooms. The building took 7 months to complete and is comprised of 36 modules that were built off-site.  The building is designed for high energy efficiency, with six-inch walls, efficient air conditioning and lighting, and fins on exterior windows to block direct sunlight but allow ambient light.  This is the first building that reflects EUSD's new open concept, project-based learning rooms with garage doors and exposed concrete floors.

The new Math and Science Building was funded by Escondido voters through Proposition E, which was approved on November 4, 2014, and authorized $182.1 million in General Obligation Bonds for school modernization and facilities improvement.

The event is open to the public and includes the participation of students, their families, teachers, staff, board members, and donors.
