Traveling a little over the summer gave me an opportunity to see new places, take in beautiful and unfamiliar scenery, and see and watch people as they went about their way. I always try to stay vigilant about my surroundings and wary of possible danger, and try to instill that in my children as well. For as wonderful as the world is, I know that there can be danger around any corner and someone willing to harm the innocent. In watching the news and the perpetuation of events and atrocities that I cannot fathom, I still try so hard to have that optimistic view of people (in general). I just can't help but think of the good that is out there, trying to grow among the ignorance, surfacing in places without cameras or social media accounts, quietly saving lives. I think because I've met so many from all walks of life (similar and diverse) who really just want the same things I do; happy and health family, and the blessing of living in peace with my neighbors and community, that I can still believe in "good". I'm not naive enough to think this happens everywhere. And in a few days, we are going to be welcoming students from everywhere who bear the scars of things we cannot fathom. My hope as you start your year is that you can be that positive force for your students. That through you, they see the light of hope, the assurance of acceptance, and the promise of a future that can truly be theirs. |
