Dear Community Members,

Several of us attended the Minnesota Age and Disabilities Odyssey Conference hosted by the MN Department of H uman Services and the MN Board on Aging June 21-22. The Opening General Session keynote speaker was Jenn Nichols, PhD, from  FrameWorks Institute. She shared a presentation called "Using Research to Tell More Effective Stories: The Framing Approach." We thought the insights she shared can help all of us improve our communications, especially with people whose culture is different from ours.

Ms. Nichols told us that cognition isn't logical because culture mediates meaning. People rely on cultural models to interpret, organize and make meaning. Frame elements help shape understanding - one element is the use of metaphors. She used "construction" as a metaphor to describe social services and the importance of providing the bricks and mortar to "construct well-being."
