"While there are thrills of victory in life, there also is the agony of defeat and disappointment. Recently, a friend was struggling to help his teen daughter handle the immense disappointment of failing her first driving test. To her, it seemed at that moment like her world was ending. To him, he knew it to be only a bump in the road of life and was able to navigate her through it and come out stronger for it.
"When our kids are dealing with disappointments, they may not know how to respond. Like my friend, as parents, our job is to help them navigate through that disappointment. How we guide our children through trials today will shape how they handle trials in the future." Excerpt from "How to Help Your Teen Deal With Disappointment" by Mark Merrill, president of Family First, helps parents help their kids deal with disappointment.
This video by Alpha M., life coach, gives 4 basic tips to dealing with disappointment.
1-Pain is part of the growing process
2-Everything is temporary
3-Scars and growing pains show strength of experiences overcome.
4-Worrying about something never change anything.

Timing is everything! Although many schools accept applications until a month before school starts, financial aid, scholarships, and housing opportunities are gone long before then. With diligence a quality education is attainable.
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Opens October 1st. Check with your school to find out when their FAFSA night is, bring in your 2015 income taxes and complete it with in-person help to make the process smooth. You can also visit https://fafsa.ed.gov/ to get started on the application. College application week is October 31- November 4th which means that you can apply to to most of Montana colleges for free or a free or deferred until enrollment payment. Most applications can be filled then submitted that week. Be prepared and work with your counselor to take advantage of this opportunitiy to keep money in your pocket!
Something to remember: For many students, even those who qualify for Financial Assistance from your FAFSA you will only receive about 60% to cover your college needs. The rest of the amount will be offered in student & parent loans. These costs can be offset with scholarships. There are many sites that you can visit to find scholarships. First would be your school counselor. They will have access to many local scholarships that don’t get posted on national sites. Some of the other scholarship websites that can be used are: www.smartaboutcollege.org, www.scholarships.com, and www.fastweb.com.
Since 1984, Horatio Alger Association Members and Friends have been funding need-based college scholarships to support deserving young people overcome their adversity and pursue their dreams through higher education. So far the Association has awarded more than $125 million to approximately 20,000 students.. They have national, state, and career specific scholarships available. Apply now! The deadline for these is October 25th. https://scholars.horatioalger.org/scholarships/about-our-scholarship-programs/
