April 2015

Earth Day is almost here...

Come see us Saturday April 25 from 11am to 4pm downtown at White River State Park during Earth Day Indiana! Admission is free! Meet a screech owl and learn more about park birds from resident bird expert Kevin Carlsen. We'll be giving away seed packets and accepting sign-ups in advance for our free Kids Fishing Derby Saturday, June 6. Membership & gate passes will also be available on-site. The overall event will feature 100+ green vendors, hands-on activities, live music, food and more!

Also take note of "Eagle Creek Recycles," the park's new recycling initiative that kicks off on Earth Day, April 22! Help us protect the environment by dropping off your used plastic, aluminum and glass containers in the blue recycling bins as you leave the park. You'll find bins at the 56th Street and 71st Street entrances, and by the beach house.
Woodworking event set for May 8

First of all, we had a tremendous turn out for Kevin's bird talk on March 20! A big thank you to everyone who attended! We hope you enjoyed yourself, and we're excited to invite you to similar events in the future. If you know of someone who didn't catch wind of the event, make sure to pass this e-newsletter along so they can join our email list. This is the quickest way for us to directly communicate with you!

We're excited to announce yet another event we're hosting at the Earth Discovery Center on Friday, May 8 from 6-8pm. One of central Indiana's finest woodturners, Jim Dupler, will join us to give some insight into the unique art of woodturning and perform some intricate lathe demos. Guests can also enter-to-win a handcrafted wooden cutting board! Register here by May 6.

Looking for sponsors

With the Iron Eagle only 3 months away, we're seeking sponsors that will help us achieve our mission to promote, preserve, protect and enhance our park. Foundation sponsorship provides an expanded opportunity for more people to enjoy the beauty of our park. Sponsorship lasts for a year, and support begins at the $250 level. For more info, click here!

Summer camp registration is filling up

The Earth Discovery Center (EDC) and Ornithology Center (OC) are hosting 17 different types of nature-themed summer camps for youth ages 4-15 starting in June, and continuing through July! The "Indiana Young Birders Camp" and "Eagle Creek Adventure Camp" for ages 12-15 are both new this year. Cost varies depending on the camp, and pre-registration is required.

Check out the schedule, then register with the course number online. Or for EDC camps, call 327.7148, and OC camps, call 327.BIRD (2473).

Other park updates

On March 31, Eagle Creek staff received the Mayor's Performance Award for a 2014 revenue increase of $128,000 (an 11% increase) without raising overall expenses!

On a developing note, 11,000 native trees will be planted for wetland restoration through May 1. During this time, you'll find detour signs on the orange & green trails. You can find more info here!

In early May, Cummins will be creating a migration course in front of the OC, an educational natural play area where students can learn about the obstacles birds face during migration. Also at the OC, staff plans to conclude construction of the outdoor classroom by adding seating for raptor presentations.

Lastly, Eagle Creek Outfitters is now open on the weekends, and Go Ape is open all week except for Tuesdays and Wednesdays in April and May. Don't forget, as a Foundation member you get  discounts  with these park partners!
