Summertime Eagle Flyers Reminders

Hot Starts
Hot starting any of the 172s or 182s is simple, just don't use the primer and follow-up the normal start-up procedure. Make sure the throttle is open about 1/4" and then crank, advancing the mixture when the engine fires.

Cowl Plugs
Be sure to use cowl plugs when the airplane is parked on a ramp - this will prevent birds from nesting in the planes. Also, please make sure that checking for nests part of your pre-flight check.

Correct cowl plug placement is OVER the prop and spinner - not underneath or behind.

Cancelling a Flight
In the event a flight needs to be cancelled for those summer pop-ups - please remove it promptly from SkyScheduler. This is a courtesy to other pilots.

Always feel free to call Becky at 317-769-4487 if you have any questions on the above.
Greetings!

Eagle Flyers and Montgomery Aviation are excited to announce the addition of a couple of new aircraft to the Eagle Flyers rental fleet!

We now have a 2005 Cessna 172SP NavIII for rent and instruction. For those of you who aren't familiar with the term "NavIII" it means it's a G1000 equipped aircraft! N1884M (likely to be re-registered soon with one of our "EF" tail numbers) is a beautiful plane with just about 550 hours on the airframe and engine.  It is renting out at just $155 / hr to Eagle Flyer Members.

Our new G1000 equipped Cessna 172!

G1000 Panel in N1884M
Additionally, we have also added a Mooney Ovation 3 to our rental fleet as well. With true airspeeds of 160 knots+, this is a great cross-country aircraft for business or pleasure. N216RA is also a G1000 equipped aircraft with a beautiful interior and only around 350 hours on the airframe and engine. It currently rents out at $280 / hr for Eagle Flyers Members.
Our new Mooney Ovation 3
Panel of N216RA
The check-out requirement for both aircraft will depend on your level of previous G1000 or similarly equipped aircraft experience. In the Cessna and for those with G1000 experience, it might be as simple as a flight around the patch and an approach (for those with an IFR rating). For those who are new to the G1000, VFR pilots can expect it to take approximately 2 two-hour sessions, and IFR pilots may require an additional two-hour session to understand the complexities of the G1000 under IFR. Ultimately, the check-out is at the discretion of the CFI. Currently, Pat Gaston, Jack Vandeventer, and Kris Barnett are able to provide G1000 check-outs. Other instructors will be adding their ability soon.

The Mooney is also a complex aircraft with unique operating characteristics due to it's speed and operation at higher altitudes that may require additional experience. Again, there is no "one-size-fits-all" approach - check-out will be at the discretion of the CFI.

We hope you'll try out these new aircraft!  Please let us know if you have any questions!
News from Around the Airport
The Loss of Former Hamilton County Airport Authority Board President - Donald R. Silvey

We are saddened to report the passing of Donald Silvey, former Hamilton County Airport Authority Board President. Don lost his struggle with cancer last Thursday, September 5 but not before being part of a re-dedication of the terminal building in his honor earlier this month. Don had served on the board since 2004 and had been President for the last 7 years. He was instrumental in helping the airport to grow over the last decade and led the charge on many of the capital projects you have seen over the years including the runway resurfacing, taxiway expansion, ramp expansion, and taxiway lighting project. Don will be sorely missed by all.

The visitation will be TODAY (Monday, September 9) from 5pm - 8pm at Flanner and Buchanan at 325 East Carmel Drive.  Funeral services will be held at Carmel Lutheran Church (4850 East Main Street) TOMORROW (Tuesday, September 10) at 11:30am.

Read about the terminal building renaming and see more pictures from the event.

Read Don's obituary and find out about funeral and visitation arrangements scheduled for Monday, September 9 and Tuesday, September 10.

Montgomery Aviation now a Certified Cessna Service Center!

We hope you'll try Montgomery Aviation for all your Cessna warranty, service bulletin, regular maintenance, and other repair needs. You'll be glad you did!
Many Successful Events in August!

August was a busy month at Montgomery Aviation!

7th Annual Down Syndrome Indiana Open House and Fly-In
On August 3rd, we hosted our 7th Annual Fly-In and Open House in support of Down Syndrome Indiana.  We raised over $18,000 this year, a record and had over 1,000 people come out and enjoy the day.  We hope you'll join us next year on August 9th (we are pushing it back a year to avoid any conflicts with Oshkosh). We will be combining the Air Race and Open House into one long day of events - so be prepared for a full day of fun next year!

General Aviation Issues Round-table Discussion with Congresswoman Brooks
On Thursday, August 8th, Indy Exec hosted a round-table event with Congresswoman Susan W. Brooks (IN-5) who represents all of Hamilton County, and parts of Boone, Marion, and other surrounding counties. Aviation representatives from across the region and from all different walks of life in aviation gathered at Indy Exec to share the value of GA to their business or community and to discuss issues of importance and concern.  The round-table was a great success and we were very grateful to have the Congresswoman there.  Read more!

Indy Air Race
On August 10th, Indy Exec hosted the Indy Air Race put on by the Sport Air Racing League. The weather cooperated for a great event with about 20 participating aircraft of all shapes and sizes. The day kicked-off with a pancake breakfast and ended with a wonderful ribeye lunch provided by the Hendricks County Aviation Association. Next year's race will be even better as it will be combined with our annual DSI Open House on August 9th, 2014.  We hope you'll consider participating next year - anyone can!

The Art of Motoring
On Friday August 23rd, Indy Exec hosted the "Art of Motoring".  This beautiful event transformed the airport into a showcase for cars, airplanes, and entertainment. The hangar has never looked like this before! The event was connected with the Artmobelia event held in Carmel on the following Saturday and benefited the Art with a Heart charity.  It was a lot of fun and we hope to get to host again next year.

September 11- Young Eagle Flights at FKR

The EAA Chapter out of Delphi Indiana will be assisting with a Young Eagle Rally at Frankfort Municipal Airport this Wednesday morning, September 11, 2013.  The flights are for students from
Clinton County Schools who are participating in the "Learning to Lead" program. Montgomery Aviation and Eagle Flyers have done this for several years now in partnership with a local EAA Chapter. This year, there are 38 students who need rides (more than in previous years) and extra pilots and planes would be appreciated.  If you are available on Wednesday morning starting at 8am to give flights out of FKR - your assistance would be appreciated. You do need to be a current EAA Member to be able to participate.

Please contact Bobby Beem at 765-670-2124 or via email if you are able to help or have any questions.

September 12 - AOPA Safety Seminar

AOPA will be hosting one of their regular safety seminars this
Thursday, September 12 from 7pm - 9pm at the Wyndham Indianapolis West Hotel located at 2544 Executive Drive, Indianapolis.

This seminar is entitled "Weather Challenge":

You don't need a meteorologist-level understanding of weather to be a good pilot-though to judge from some of the educational materials out there, you might think so. Skew-T diagrams and moist adiabatic lapse rates are all well and good, but for most of us it's the practical stuff that matters.

With that in mind, our new seminar is aimed at bolstering your real-world weather wisdom-and having a little fun, too. As with our recent "Chart Challenge" seminar, we'll put your knowledge to the test, quizzing you on everything from METAR/TAF decoding to real-world weather scenarios. Along the way we'll cover:

  • The most important weather resources for pilots
  • Critical tie-ins with risk management and decision making
  • Weather-related accidents that didn't need to happen
  • The promise (and pitfalls) of cockpit weather
September 14 - Eagle Flyers Monthly Fly-Out
August Flyout to Mattoon

Our September fly-out is next Saturday September 14.  We are planning to try something a little different this time. We are going to go to the Canute Air Museum in Rantoul, IL.  Instead of going to a place for lunch, we are going to
pack our lunch and find a place to eat there.  It should be a great time.

We plan to meet at Indy Exec (TYQ) at 9:30am to match planes, pilots, and passengers and take-off around 10:00am. Contact Pat Gaston with questions.

October 5 - Critical Decision Making (CDM) presented by COPA

Save the date for Saturday, October 5 from 10am - 2pm!  We are still working on details, but the Cirrus Owners and Pilot's Association will be hosting a Critical Decision Making Seminar at Indy Exec. Even though the event is hosted by COPA - it is open to all pilots.

Additionally, Cirrus will be there with their new G5 SR22 to check out!  We'll send out some more information on the event as we finalize details - but you won't want to miss this great safety related seminar!

For more information about the seminar and to register, go HERE.
October 10-12 - AOPA Summit

If you haven't been before, AOPA Summit is a great place to learn, connect, and be a part of the GA Community. The recently announced agenda includes Indiana Congressman Todd Rokita, Ken Griffey, Jr., Aaron Tippen, and new AOPA President Mark Baker.  Don't miss out on this great event - click on the image above to learn more and register.
HCAA Monthly Meetings
IEA Logo Standard Every month the Hamilton County Airport Authority (HCAA) meets to discuss the Indianapolis Executive Airport.  The public is welcome to attend. Meetings are held the first Wednesday of the month at 6:30pm in the Commissioners Courtroom of the Hamilton County Government and Judicial Center.  The September meeting has been moved to Wednesday, September 11th.
