"Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, and in purity."

Eagle Classic JV Volleyball Tournament

Coach: Josue Morales

"I could not be prouder of our JV Volleyball team this season. Each of the JV players gave their all this season and never stopped striving to do their very best. I enjoyed watching the growth of each player and I thank them for allowing me to be their Coach. The kids worked together as a team on and off the court, showing respect, sportsmanship, and love for the game. Whenever they stepped onto the court they made us all proud. I thank them for their hard work and dedication. I will end this note with a quote 'Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart as working for the Lord, not for men.' Go Eagles!" --Coach Josue Morales

Please see "This Week in Sports" below for information on Immanuel's Varsity Girls Volleyball team.

Families are invited, but childcare is not provided. Please bring a dish to pass. #ImmanuelEvents

12-2 PM
St. Mark's and Immanuel Churches are co-hosting Blocktober 2017, which includes an open trunk-or-treat event in the BMO Harris St. Charles - Main Branch parking lot (Riverside Ave. between Main St./Rt. 64 and Walnut St. in downtown St. Charles), family fall-themed games, face painting, a magician, food tents, and more. It's fun for the entire family! No admission or registration is necessary. Food is available for purchase at food tents and at local downtown restaurants.
The event is part of a larger joint celebration of the 500th Anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. The four pillars of the movement help center both historic Fox Valley congregations in Grace Alone, Faith Alone, Scripture Alone, and Jesus Alone. Both congregations will host a 10:30 AM worship service at the Arcada Theatre in downtown St. Charles. The public is invited to both the church service and Blocktober events.
Public parking for Blocktober 2017 and the 10:30 AM worship event is available in multiple parking garages and streets in downtown St. Charles. #ImmanuelEvents

PLEASE NOTE: No worship services will be held at Immanuel on Sun., Oct. 29. The only worship service on that day will be the Reformation Celebration service at the Arcada Theatre.
School Safety Drills
Safety Drills

Each fall, Immanuel completes several safety drills, including fire drills, lockdown drills, tornado drills, and bus evacuation drills. There are also ongoing safety discussions among staff members throughout the school year. The staff meet annually with the Batavia Fire and Police Departments to review the ILCS Critical Incident Plan. All of these activities are meant to be proactive in making Immanuel a safe place for everyone. The drills often prompt several age-appropriate “what if…” conversations in the classrooms and it is likely that those types of conversations come up at home, as well, which is why the administration wants to share the following points that were stressed in recent conversations at school:
  • At the end of K-8 chapel last week, Mrs. Laughlin talked about “Run-Hide-Fight” in the case of an intruder, and explained that an intruder is a person who does not belong in our building and is trying to hurt people. If this happens, the first choice is to go to the nearest exit and follow their teacher’s directions to a safe place. If it's not possible to get out safely or this is unclear, students are to follow the teacher’s directions and find a place to hide inside the building. These strategies were practiced during lockdown drills. If neither of these options are available, everyone must fight to protect ourselves.
  • Mrs. Laughlin assured children that they are in the care of adults who are there to protect them and help keep them as safe as possible.
  • Mrs. Laughlin also talked about the assurance that God is always with the children and staff. Awful things happen because of sin and evil; however, "God is our Comforter and strength." (Psalms 46:1).
Please do not hesitate to contact Mrs. Laughlin with questions or to further discuss the school’s safety plan.

Girls' Varsity Volleyball
Coaches: Rebecca Bello and Bill McLane

This has been a season of “better.” The girls' varsity goals were simply to do better: Better than last season (which was a GREAT season for ILS), better than last week, better than yesterday, better than the last point. There are no expectations of perfection, just better; and so far, the team has been very successful in this effort!
The ILS girls varsity volleyball team is heading into the end of their season with a tournament this week at Trinity-Roselle (match/pool play began Tuesday evening, with the final rounds on Saturday). The team is the top-seeded team in their pool, so it should be a fun tournament.  The last girls varsity home match is next Tue., Oct. 24 at 4:30 PM v Immanuel-Crystal Lake.
Varsity girls won their conference for the first time in ILS history with a 7-1 conference record! As if that’s not enough awesome, they received the official acceptance to compete in the Illinois Lutheran Sports Association state tournament, for just the second time in school history (the first invitation was the 2016 season). The State tournament will be held Nov. 3-5 in Springfield. There are no locally-played brackets nor play-ins, just the top 20 teams in the state coming together for a full weekend of matches. The team is looking to improving on last year’s placement--cheering and support is much appreciated!

During the season, varsity girls finished third in the St. Paul-Aurora Cougar Classic at the end of August (the team finished fourth in that tournament in 2016). The teams that finished first and second in that tournament are also headed to State. The team finished fourth overall in the Immanuel-Belvidere tournament, which was a vast improvement from their eighth place finish in 2016, out of sixteen teams. The teams that earned first, second, and third places at the Belvidere tournament are perennial state-winning teams. Overall, this team has been competing with the big ones all season!
"We are so proud of each and every one of the players. They’ve worked hard all season, putting blood, sweat, and tears out on the court. They still have some work to do before they're done, but these girls have been amazing!" --Coaches Rebecca Bello and Bill McLane

Each athlete needs to complete/submit the Athletic Participation form, a Concussion form, a Sports Physical (good for 13 months), and required fees (basketball $125, cheer $100). GoEagles!

PTL News
Walk-A-Thon Postponed

The Immanuel PTL has decided to postpone the Walk-A-Thon fundraiser until later in the school year in order to better serve the needs of the school. The postponement this year allows the PTL Board to complete the projects that were approved and started last year, such as installing water bottle fillers and a new playground surface. In addition, it provides an opportunity to evaluate new support and enrichment options that staff and teachers will present to the Board. The Parent-Teacher League is currently looking to change this school year’s event into something that will enhance activities already happening in the classroom, such as a Read-a-Thon, culminating in an afternoon of reading activities for all grade levels during the school day. More details to come! The goal for future years is to return the “A-Thon” fundraiser to the fall time frame. The new PTL Board is excited to serve Immanuel and wants to ensure that they are being good stewards of the opportunities presented to them.

Next Week in The Story
The Story is a compilation of the stories, poems, and teachings of the Bible condensed into accessible chapters. These chapters allow the reader to witness Bible events in the order in which they occurred. Each weekend at Immanuel during the 2017 2018 ministry year, a new chapter of The Story is introduced at worship. At Sunday School, Sunday adult Bible study, and during the week at Immanuel Lutheran School in religion classes and weekday Bible studies, children and adults are delving into that same chapter; developing together as
Disciples of Christ. This book is available outside the church office for $5. A limited number of copies are available.
Chapter 7: The Battle Begins

JOSHUA 1-2, 6, 8, 10-11, 23-24
Israel had spent the last 40 years on a road to nowhere. A lot can change in 40 years. All of the people who were slaves in Egypt had died, except for two, Joshua and Caleb. Moses had died too. Joshua had been his right-hand man and he was Israel’s new leader. The wilderness of disobedience and defeat was behind them now and a new generation camped at Canaan’s edge. A lot had changed during the wilderness years, but God had not. The promise He’d made to Abraham over 600 years before was about to turn into reality.
