MILTON'S TEACHER AND
PROFESSIONAL OF THE YEAR
TEACHER OF THE YEARTOTY
I wanted to take a moment to congratulate Milton's finalists for Teacher of the Year. This group is truly reflective of the modern educator. They have chosen a career in public education because they found intrinsic value in sharing their love of learning, their ideals, and their life experiences with students. The greatest reward they have in our profession is in knowing they have made a difference. We can all celebrate the impact they have had, and will continue to have, on the lives of our students and also our colleagues.
The Finalists:
Mr. Drew Bowers, Performing Arts
Mrs. Rebecca Brown, Science
Mrs. Marrea Haslett, Visual Arts
Mrs. Lisa Silverman, Social Studies
Mrs. Denise Sockler, English
Choosing one of these amazing teachers to be Milton's 2016-17 Teacher of the Year was extremely difficult. After a thorough observation, interview and evaluation process, the committee selected Mrs. Rebecca Brown as Milton's Teacher of the Year.

PROFESSIONAL OF THE YEARPOTY
I would also like to recognize Milton's Professional of the Year. This Professional is often the first face many of our students and visitors see when they enter Milton. She has been a welcomed addition to the Milton family since last year and she is often the go to person when someone needs information or a kind ear. Congratulations to Ms. Monie McCool as Milton's Professional of the Year.

Thank you ALL for the AMAZING work you do for our students daily!
TEACHER OF THE MONTH
CONGRATULATIONS TO MS. MARILEE SANDERS
FOR BEING NAMED FEBRUARY TEACHER OF THE MONTH. ftotm
Ms. Sanders' philosophy of Teaching:
As a personal philosophy, she has always adhered to the belief that the fundamental outcome of teaching is a function of the connection between personal attributes and acquisition of knowledge both for the teacher and for the student. Additionally, she believes students ultimately develop to the fullest potential through learning that evolves around the cultivation of self-respect. Her teaching practice is guided by a philosophy of teaching to student strengths while recognizing emotional and instructional needs. Through years of teaching students with disabilities in addition to team classes, she is aware it is increasingly important to recognize that the many dimensions in the lives of students underscore the importance of awareness of needs. Students who have experienced learning difficulties, negative interactions, and complicated and stressful personal lives are particularly in need of support. Her philosophy is a commitment to reduce the formidable barriers for students and to maintain the belief that students can achieve complex goals and eliminate the shadows of obstacles. The perception students possess regarding their personal capabilities greatly influences performance, effort, attitude, and goal achievement. She believes that in order for students to maximize potential, it is imperative for empowerment and self-efficacy components to be at the heart of a teaching philosophy.

MILTON THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS:
YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN
GET YOUR TICKETS NOW! THEATER
Milton Theatre Company is excited to announce our 2016 spring musical... YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN; a wickedly inspired re-imagining of the Frankenstein legend, based on Mel Brooks' classic 1974 comedy masterpiece!
Grandson of the infamous Victor Frankenstein, Frederick Frankenstein inherits his family's estate in Transylvania. With the help of his hunchbacked sidekick, Igor, and leggy lab assistant, Inga - Frederick finds himself in the mad scientist shoes of his ancestors. "It's a...live!" he exclaims as he brings to life a creature to rival his grandfather's. Eventually, of course, the monster escapes and hilarity continuously abounds.
With such memorable tunes as "The Transylvania Mania," "He Vas My Boyfriend" and "Puttin' On The Ritz," the campy fun of Young Frankenstein is scientifically-proven, monstrously good entertainment! Tickets for Young Frankenstein are on sale today. Visit http://miltontheatrecompany.com/  to purchase tickets.

FROM THE SUMMIT
Dealing with Anxiety

Article by:  Daniel Walters, MA, LAPC, The Summit Counseling Centersummit
If your child is struggling with anxiety he is likely feeling panicked over projects, staying up late with homework, or lacking the motivation to even get out of bed to get to school. Of course, every parent knows that when a child misses school he only makes the problem even worse for himself; projects and homework and classwork will pile up in their absence! And eventually they begin to sink under all that work!

The thought of missing class to see a therapist seems counterproductive!
First of all, I understand the struggle. My wonderful Mom spent the majority of my high school years trying to make sure I was on time, turning in homework, and passing my classes. But by my senior year she was burned out and I had never learned how to do it on my own. So when she said "I quit!", I began to sink because I never learned how to swim!

In order to save your child time, Summit Counseling has confidential, mental health services available on site at Milton High School. That way, they only miss 1 hour of school instead of several in order to get the help they need.  For more information, call 678.893.5300.

Part of teaching your children how to deal with anxiety means teaching them how to prioritize. So, set the example that their health is the biggest priority above any AP class. Without a solid mental health foundation, grades and motivation will begin to crumble. When they've learned to balance they can begin to learn how to swim on their own through deeper waters.
Let's not pretend this whole thing is easy. The reality of life is that it tends to be more complicated and difficult than anyone ever admits to. Your job as a parent is not easy and neither is being a teen in high school!

6 Ways to Help Your Teen
Article by: Julia F. Harris, MS, NCC, LAPC, The Summit Counseling Center
As adults, parents have a lot of experience handling situations that might feel distressing to a teenager. Teenagers do not have as much life experience which can make it difficult for them to choose skills to best work through a problem. How can parents help their teenagers cope through difficult situations?
  1. Help the teenager to look at the problem from different perspectives. Help the teenager envision the problem from someone else's eyes. Remind the teenager to look at the problem subjectively and objectively. This will help the teenager see both sides of a problem.
  2. Encourage the teenager to express their feelings related to a problem. When teenagers express their opinion and emotions it helps them build confidence and trust in their own feelings. Expressing their feelings will also increase their own insight into the problem.
  3. Give the teenager feedback on how you handled a similar problem. Acknowledge how the teenager is feeling and share a similar experience. Make sure to choose a situation that led to a positive outcome or positive growth. Keep the focus of the teenager, only disclosing enough to share skills useful for their situation
  4. Be open-minded and nonjudgmental with the teenager. Let the teenager know that you understand and that you respect their feelings about the problem. Tell the teenager that difficult situations are common occurrences in life, and that you will be there to support them. This fosters trust and prevents the teenager from feeling alone with the problem.
  5. Be curious. Ask the teenager open ended questions and give objective viewpoints. Do your best not to offer direct advice to the teenager. Distressing experience can be hard for teenagers to work through, but they learn better when they make their own decisions and have room to make mistakes. This creates emotional growth and improves coping skills.
  6. Consider seeking counseling. If the teenager is struggling make an appointment with a therapist to get support for the teenager as her or she learns to navigate difficult problems.
Interested in scheduling an appointment? Call Summit Counseling Center at 678.893.5300 to schedule an appointment with one of the school-based therapists at Milton High School. Visit the Summit's website for more information.
