Does your bike need an overhaul?
|
At JRABS, our
bicycle assembly process is the most comprehensive in the industry. So, chances are that if your bike didn't come from us, it needs an overhaul here's why:
"Grease falure could come at any time. Factory original greases are often of the lowest quality and applied in very limited or erratic quantities. Frames are often inadequately cleaned at the factory, so bottom bracket and headset grease often has been contaminated with abrasive particles even before the bike has been ridden. For these reasons it is difficult to project the normal calendar time or elapsed miles that should occur between bearing overhauls. As a rule of thumb, 2,000-3,000 miles or two to three years of generally fair-weather riding should make a bike ready for an overhaul. The best method to determine whether grease has become due for replacement is inspection." -

Bikes are shipped to bike shops in the same manner, no matter the brand. What the bike shop does from there will make a huge difference in the bike's performance and longevity. Here are the approximate times to assemble a new adult bicycle:
- Mass merchant: 15 mins
- Chain sports store: 20 mins
- National chain bicycle store: 25mins
- Local chain bicycle store: 30 mins
- Independent bicycle shop: 45 mins
- JRABS: 2-3 hours

Now that winter is upon us, it's time for us to put our service on sale! Our tagline is
"Providing Bicyclists with the Greatest Mechanical Advantage". This is something that we live by, as we are mostly a repair and maintenance shop. We have a pure passion for making bikes work as they were designed, and that you're comfortable and efficient on yours.
Unfortunately, most folks take preventative maintenance for granted, and end up coming in only when there is a problem, usually after they hit the road in the Spring, when the weather is nice. I recently read an article that was emailed to me from
Barnett Bicycle Institute. Here is an excerpt that rings true with most bicyclists when it comes to bike maintenance:
"Bike shops usually don't see a customer bring in a bike until a failure has occurred. Not only has this ruined a ride, it generally means less cost-effective solutions will be called for over the long haul than the cost effectiveness of preventive maintenance. Additionally, the reality is that these ride-stopping failures rarely came out of the blue. Instead, slowly, steadily, and insidiously some type of performance, whether it is shift performance, brake performance, or mechanical efficiency, has been deteriorating so slowly that it goes almost unnoticed until complete failure occurs. In the mean time, the experience of riding has been subtly less enjoyable and less rewarding for a significant amount of time."
I completely agree. So please keep reading about why now is the best time to bring your bike in for service!

Can't live without your bike? You can bring it in for the estimate, take it with you, and bring it back to us a few days before you would like to pick it up.
We will need to see your bike before estimating it for service (we can't quote over the phone or via email - sorry).
