Communication Starts Early!
Early social skills lead to  communication!

Even if your child is not yet speaking, there are great ways that your child is communicating with you.

Be excited about these early language and early social skills!

  • Points at objects to show interest or wants
  • Looks at an object when another person points at it
  • Shows interest in what other people are doing or saying
  • Makes eye contact with people and seeks out people
  • Shows awareness of other people's feelings (comforts others)
  • Seems aware when other people are talking to them
  • Plays near other children, may hand things to other children or accept things from other children
  • Imitates actions of others
  • Plays "pretend" games. For example "feeding" a doll
  • Learns new skills by watching others to see what they are doing.

You can help your child practice these skills at home by playing along during pretend games, noticing when your child is showing awareness of others and continue to talk to your child.
