Keep Potty Training Positive
by Julia Rockwell, MS

First help your child understand when they are wet or dry. When checking their diaper use one-word labels: wet, dry, dirty. The more animated or sing-songy your voice is, the better!

Move diaper changing into the bathroom and start changing their diapers standing up near the toilet. This is one step towards comfort around the toilet. Remember to label.

Model! If the child sees their parents or siblings go potty they are more likely to understand the process.

Read, Talk, and Watch! There are many books and videos for toddlers about potty training. Keep talking about it. "Oh, I am getting that full feeling! Time to go potty!"

Start sitting them on the toilet if they are motivated to do so. They should be happy about it. If a child is resistant that is okay; she's just telling you she's not ready yet. Keep offering and stay positive.

Is my Child Ready for Potty Training?

Watch for these signs that your child is ready for potty training:
  • Stays dry for at least two hours
  • Undresses/tries to undress
  • Hides or senses when doing business (aka going poop or pee)
  • Comfortable around the toilet/sitting on the toilet

Self-Care Strategy of the Month: Spring Cleaning

When you think about cleaning your home, do you ever feel like the woman in this photo? Taking some time to deep clean and declutter your living space will make you feel more organized and on top of things. You don't need to spend a full day or weekend cleaning your home. Instead set aside small blocks of time — 10 or 20 minutes — to focus on specific cleaning tasks. Remember that your goal is progress, not perfection. Here are a few tips for tackling common problem areas:
  • Your closet: Our closets are often the messiest and most cluttered spaces in our homes. If you haven't worn an item of clothing in over a year, it's time to let it go. Do not keep clothes or shoes that you don't wear and are likely never to wear again. Donate, swap, or attempt to resell gently used items.
  • Papers: Having a filing system is essential. An annual accordion folder with labeled sections is one method that works well for some people. Any papers or receipts that need to be saved go in the folder. All others get recycled or shredded. Kids artwork can be proudly displayed, filed for saving, or recycled.
  • Outgrown kid's clothing: Give away, resell, or store in bins for your next child. Some options for reselling include local thrift stores, hosting a garage sale, or participating in the biannual Itty Bitty Boutique sale (coming up next in September at the Lane County Fairgrounds).
Playdate at Adventure! Children's Museum

When: Wednesday, April 25, 9 am - noon

What: Our families will receive a discounted rate of $3/person (children are free under age 2). The museum opens to the general public at 10, so arrive early for a quieter experience.

Where: Adventure! is located at the top of the escalators in Valley River Center.
The group is based upon The Incredible Years, developed by Dr. Carolyn Webster- Stratton with the University of Washington.

The group is designed to help parents decrease negative behaviors in preschool-aged children. Tyler Wood, a speech and language pathologist and JoEllyn Peterson, an early childhood special educator with Early Childhood CARES, will lead the group.

Childcare will be provided each week by Early Childhood CARES staff. A light dinner will also be provided each week. Pre-registration is required. Parents need to register for the group even if childcare is not needed.
