Tips from a Parent who gets it:
Person Centered Planning
This month we are focusing on Person Centered Planning!

What is your WHY for your child?

Even though our children have differences that seem like challenges right now, they also have strengths!
  • They have interests!
  • They CAN make choices!
  • They CAN be active participants in their lives!
  • They CAN be a part of their community!

What is Person Centered Planning?

As parents, we know our children the best! So who would be better to tell others about them? Well, once our children move to preschool, we aren't there all the time to be able to explain why our daughter isn't making eye contact with her peers, or what would be best to help our son participate during circle.

Person centered planning makes it easier to really define who your child is so everyone has the information they need to help your child be successful:

  • What are his/her favorite activities?
  • What does he/she do outside of school?
  • What might be hard for him/her?
  • What is he/she really good at?
  • What works best when he/she needs help or is having a hard day?

**For more about Person Centered Planning and how to create your child's "One Page Profile" join us on Saturday February 13th at 10am for our Parent Chat and Play Group RSVP: Call Carla 541-346-2578 or text 541-556-9196 .**

Winter is almost over!    Here's some fun ideas to try while we wait for Spring!

Bundle up and take a walk outside and look for things like birds, flowers starting to grow, different types or rocks, or even bugs. Your child will have a great time and you can model some language!

Go to the library in your community and get a book. Some libraries even have Story times already set up to go listen to a story!

Cook something simple together. Your child can pour and stir and some older children could even use a butter knife to help cut softer foods.

Did you know your family might qualify for a tax deduction in 2015?

2015 Tax Exemption for Parents of Children with Disabilities

The Oregon Tax Code provides an additional tax exemption for parents of eligible children with disabilities in Oregon. The procedure for claiming an exemption for the 2015 tax year is explained in the Oregon Individual Income Tax Return and Instruction booklets.

Who qualifies for the exemption?

A child qualifies if he or she meets all of the following criteria:

  • Qualifies as a dependent of the parent(s) for tax year 2015;

  • Is eligible for early intervention services (birth to age 3) or early childhood special education services (ages 3 to 5) and has an IFSP (Individualized Family Service Plan)

What documentation must be submitted with the tax return to qualify for this exemption?

As the tax instruction booklet indicates, Parents need to have a copy of the eligibility statement for the child and a current IFSP but these documents do NOT need to be sent with the tax form.

Oregon Department of Revenue Online Instructions and Forms:

For further information and assistance in completing Oregon tax forms, consult a tax professional or contact the Oregon Department of Revenue at 1-800-356-4222.

Oregon income tax forms/publications are available at the DOR website (www.oregon.gov/DOR). That process will allow you to claim the additional tax exemption for the 2015 year.

Fun way to help your child get ready for Kindergarten!
Opportunity:
The University of Oregon's Early Intervention Program is looking for parents to participate in the following programs: the Parent Advisory Group, the Parent Panel, and the Adopt-a-Student Project.
  • Parent Advisory Group: Our next meeting has not been scheduled yet, look for more information to come!
  • Early Intervention Program Parent Panel: Parents will come to a graduate level class and will have an opportunity to tell a little bit about their families and what life is like in a house with children with disabilities, as well as answer questions from students. There is a participation payment of $50 per family to offset the cost of childcare and transportation.
  • Adopt-a-Student Project: This project is designed to increase student’s awareness and sensitivity to the day-to-day activities associated with raising children, and the added demands of raising children with special needs. In this program, there are 4-5 arranged visits each about 1-1.5 hours long, depending on your availability. The first visit, the students would like an opportunity to get to know your family a little better and to get some practice with family interviewing. For the remaining 3 - 4 visits, the students would love to visit at any time that works well for your family and is part of your regular day. Examples include visiting your family in your home, during outings or appointments for your child.

If you are interested in participating in any of these programs (or all of them!) please contact Marina Brassfield at [email protected] or 541-346-2595.
