Enjoy the Outdoors

July is a great month for spending time outdoors with your family at parks, the beach, hikes, and festivals. Here are a few ideas of places to visit.

Hikes & Bike Rides

  • Mt. Pisgah Arboretum offers miles of family-friendly trails through a variety of ecosystems including oak savannah, cedar forest, and wetlands. Your kids will enjoy looking for frogs and turtles in the wetlands. Watch out for poison oak along the edges of trails. Parking is $4/day, or you can purchase an annual Lane County parks pass for $40 at Bi-Mart or REI.
  • Dorris Ranch features paved trails that are great for walking or biking with kids. The Dorris Ranch Loop is 1.8 miles long, or for a longer bike ride you can take the Middle Fork path 4 miles to Clearwater Park. Dorris Ranch is also a national historic site and living history farm.
  • Carl G. Washburne Memorial State Park, north of Florence, offers a 0.4 mile hike through coastal forest down to the beach. The park also features a campground with full hook-ups, tent, and yurt camping.
  • The Row River Trail is a popular bike trail near Cottage Grove, which passes several historic covered bridges.

Parks

  • The newly rebuilt Amazon Park in southeast Eugene features a wheelchair accessible play structure, and is Eugene's first fully-inclusive playground for children of all ages and mobility. It's also adjacent to Amazon Pool.
  • Charnel Mulligan Park is very toddler-friendly, with a small play structure and sand and water play area. The small size of this park also makes it easy to scan and keep eyes on your children. This park is located in south-central Eugene and was recently renovated in 2017.
  • Springfield's Meadow Park was also recently renovated and is a popular spot for families with young children. In addition to a playground, the park features a pickleball court, softball field, soccer field, and basketball court.
  • Bohemia Park in Cottage Grove has a fun play structure, walking trails, and picnic tables.

Festivals

  • Eugene Saturday Market, every Saturday from 10 am - 5 pm at Eugene Downtown Park Blocks. Free. Live music, local artisans, and international food court. Adjacent to the Farmer's Market.
  • Light of Liberty Celebration, July 4 starting at 4 pm at Island Park in Springfield. Tickets are $5 in advance (sold at Jerry's) or $8 at the gate. Children 5 and under are free. Music, fireworks, pony rides, magic shows, face painting, carnival games, and more.
  • Lane County Fair, July 18-22 at Lane County Fairgrounds in Eugene. Free every day for ages 5 and under. Free admission on July 22 from 11 am - 2 pm with a donation of canned food.
  • Bohemia Mining Days, July 19-21 in Cottage Grove. Free. Music, pony rides, carnival, living history exhibits, and a parade.
  • Children's Celebration, July 28 from 10-2 at Island Park in Springfield. This event is free with a donation of canned food. Live music, pony rides, art projects.

We need your support!

Statutory Oversight Committee

Want to find a way to become involved in Early Childhood CARES and show your support for early intervention/early childhood special education? The Statutory Oversight Committee (SOC) is comprised of service providers, community agencies, school district personnel and Early Childhood CARES families meeting to discuss fiscal issues and the delivery of services to children and their families. Meetings are quarterly from 9-10:30 a.m. at Early Childhood CARES, 1500 W. 12th Ave. in Eugene.

Childcare is not provided for SOC meetings, however, parents may request a $25 stipend which may be used to pay for self-arranged childcare.

Upcoming meetings are scheduled for:
  • July 18, 9-10:30 a.m.

Contact Ursula at [email protected] with questions or to RSVP to a meeting.
