Water Safety Tips

Summer swimming season is arriving. Follow these water safety tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics for a fun and safe season!
  • Never leave children unsupervised near the water. Drowning is a very fast and often silent process.
  • Children under age 5 should be supervised within arm's reach by a competent adult swimmer when near water.
  • Avoid floaties — these are not a substitute for approved life jackets and can create a false sense of security.
  • Consider enrolling your child in swimming lessons to increase their water safety over age 1. But remember that swimming lessons should not be seen as "drown proofing" a child of any age.
  • Tie back long hair in a bun or ponytail.
  • If a child is missing, look for them in the water before looking elsewhere.
  • Children should wear appropriately fitted life jackets at all times on boats.
  • Do not boat (as either a driver or passenger) while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. This includes some prescription medications.
Is your child transitioning to kindergarten this fall?

KITS is a free summer program designed to help children prepare for kindergarten. This evidence-based program provides a boost to children's literacy, self-regulation, and social skills through positive teaching and behavior strategies. Click here to register or for more information. In summer 2018, KITS is available for children in the following districts:
  • Bethel

  • Siuslaw
  • South Lane
  • Springfield for students attending Guy Lee, Maple, Mt. Vernon, Riverbend, & Two Rivers/Dos Rios
Trillium OHP for Diapers

For families with Trillium OHP: If your child is three or older and is not potty trained due to a developmental delay or other medical diagnosis, you can get free diapers. You need to request a prescription from your pediatrician stating the child's name, number and size of diapers needed per month, and child's diagnosis (developmental delay, autism spectrum disorder, etc). The doctor's office will fax the prescription to a vendor and the company will supply the diapers.

Private insurance will not typically cover diapers, but you can check with your insurance company to find out.
Our monthly Parent Chats will resume in October. Happy summer!
We need your support!
