Fall Positive Behavior Group

There's still time to register for our fall positive behavior group! The group is designed to help parents decrease negative behaviors in preschool-age children and is based upon The Incredible Years, developed by Dr. Carolyn Webster-Stratton with the University of Washington.

Childcare will be provided each week by Early Childhood CARES staff. A light dinner will also be provided. Pre-registration is required. Parents need to register for the group even if childcare is not needed.

Our fall class is starting Tuesday October 8 . It will meet from 5:30-7:30 pm at our main office, 1500 W. 12th Ave., Eugene. To register: call 541-346-2578, text 541-393-7200 or email [email protected].

Future classes will meet on:
  • October 15, 22, 29
  • November 5, 12, 19
  • December 3
On October 19, from 10-noon, we will host a parent chat on Going Out in the Community with Your Child, presented by Nancy Berge from Arc Families Connected. Do you have a hard time taking your child with you for errands or even fun activities? Nancy will provide resources and tips on going out in the community with your child.

Our November parent chat topic is Avoiding Sensory Overload During the Holidays, presented by Cathy Hyslop and Krista Jo Swanson, EI/ECSE Specialists. This will be on November 16, from 10-noon. Celebrating the holiday season often includes busier schedules to accommodate family traditions and get-togethers, which can be especially challenging for young kids. Cathy and Krista Jo will be sharing some preventive strategies for avoiding sensory overload and meltdowns during this festive time of year.

These parent chats will be held out the Early Childhood CARES main office, 1500 W. 12th Ave., Eugene. Coffee, childcare, and light refreshments available. Please register by contacting us by phone at 541-346-2578, by text at 541-393-7200 or email [email protected].

Teaching your Child to Cooperate with Requests

You're running late to to drop your 6-year-old off at elementary school, but your 3-year-old is refusing to put on her shoes and get in the car. We've been there too! It's frustrating when your child won't cooperate. Some kids are more compliant by nature, but even if you have a strong-willed child, you can increase the frequency of their cooperation with positive behavior training. Try these steps as recommended by the Center on the Social and Emotional Foundations for Early Learning.

1) Move closer to your child, get down on their level and restate your request in a calm and firm tone of voice.
2) If your child resists, take a deep breath and think about why they might be refusing.
  • Tell a child who is reluctant to stop an activity, "I see you want to keep playing. You can play for 3 more minutes. I'll time you. Then you must clean up."
  • Tell a child who is angry, "You are telling me you are angry and you don't want to clean up. The books need to be picked up. Once you are calm, you will need to pick them up." Wait until your child is calm before restating your direction.
  • Tell a child who is slow to begin, "I will help you get started. I will pick up one and then you pick up one."
  • You can turn it into a game by racing against the clock. Or you can let them know that a fun activity will come next. ("After you clean up the books, then we can go to the park").
3) As soon as your child begins cooperating with your request, provide praise. Be specific with your praise. "Thank you for picking up the books! You're a good helper."
