Eastern Market: Salutes a Classic: Vernon Burnett
Eastern Market Exhibitors Salute: Vernon Burnett

There are folks who just come to Eastern Market and make it there own. There are those who come to Eastern Market and make it home. There are those that come to Eastern Market and give, and give and give. Vernon Burnett has done all of the three.

Assistant Market Manger: The Flea Market at Eastern Market

Vernon Burnett

He came to The Arts and Crafts Festival at Eastern Market in 1989. His former partner a Biology professor at Morgan had had a transforming accident and began having dreams of geometric forms which lead her to draw and begin to make things. Most notably, wonderful fleece hats, throws and scarves. He came to support her by helping in the loading in and out of items and with the display. After that, he would hang out at the Market all day on the weekends. In his "day job" he was a laboratory scientist Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Mr. Burnett retired from this post after 34 years.

When asked he will tell you that he has, "a large palette of interests". Among them are languages, reading, music, art, photography, astronomy, cosmology, philosophy, geography, travel, religion, chess, fencing, chess, food and to my mind most importantly history. When asked about Eastern Market, he wrote, "The market is a school. You can learn anything there: languages-Russian, French, Polish, Urdu, Spanish, Arabic, English, Swahili, Chinese, Tibetan, Mongolian...photography, painting, pottery, jewelry, wood carving, antiquing, stain glass, candle making, soap making, paper making, furniture making/refining/repairing...glass making/collecting.... However, he wrote that what he really likes about Eastern Market are, "the characters." He named, names a few of his favorite "characters" are, "the Andrews, Noors, Becky's, Sonda's, Amoki's, Ma Brown's, Kinza's, Rall's, Rudy's, Berman's, Kumar's, Jessie's, Brunson's, Little's, Carlton's, Market Joe's, Spillane's, Kadosh's, Dedes, Crider's, Downs's, Mohamends Freeman's, etc.

Thus, it is no wonder with this kind of love of learning, knowledge and a international world view (Vernon Burnett is a veteran, he served during the "Vietnam Conflict" in Germany from 1960-1964-Captain Adjutant 24th Infantry Division Medical Battalion) that both John Harrod and Tom Rall knew a good man when they saw one. As the years passed and the market grew more hands were needed to assistant in the daily and weekend operations of both Market 5 Gallery, The Arts and Crafts Festival on Saturdays and The Sunday, Flea Market at Eastern Market. He was first approached, by John Harrod to help out around the place on Saturdays. He wrote that John initially asked him to, "watch the office, answer the phone, take photos of Market 5 News... during Market 5 functions, I'd help with security, collecting tickets, sometimes, I'd help with set up and traffic control in the alley during set up on Saturday." It should be noted, that he did all this for years as a volunteer on Saturdays.

As, Mr. Burnett tells the story that all changed, "one Sunday, in 1991, I was slumming as Tom walked by and he said, "you don't look like you have anything to do: how would you like to work for me, I'll pay you...I accepted. ". Vernon tells this wonderful story of the first Time he was responsible for everything, He wrote, " I believe it was the summer of 1998, Tom wanted to drive across country with his family so that Brady (Brady is Tom Rall's son-now in college) could see the US and play baseball as they travelled. I had full responsibility for operating the market, banking, answering the phone, updating the data base etc. When he returned, I thought whew! glad he's back, I'll get my life back. He was so pleased with the way things went, he asked me if I would continue to run the operations. That would free him up to do other things. I was happy that he was happy, so I accepted and the beat goes on..."

Tom Rall tells the story a little differently, Mr. Rall wrote, "I recruited Vernon from the exhibitor community. He used to come and help his ex-wife set up and then hang around amiably for the rest of the day. He liked the market and it had expanded to the point where I needed help. He was my first management hire and it was so long ago I don't even remember the exact year. " When asked what does Mr. Burnett do at Eastern Market, Tom Rall wrote, "essentially, he now does every thing, including exhibitor relations, banking, space assignments and onsite management on Sundays. He has worked three or four days a week ever since he retired from the real world a decade ago." On Vernon's dedication to Eastern Market, to the team of folk that Tom Rall has "recruited" to build, maintain and grow Eastern Market, Tom Rall went further in stating that," I remember telling him I couldn't wait for him to retire. And he actually retired early so he could devote more time to the flea market. A few weeks ago we were having brunch with David Wright (Assistant Market Manager), who has been working with us for a few years on Sundays, increasingly shouldering more responsibility. David is planning to retire at the end of the year from a career at the Library of Congress. And Vernon said, "we can't wait for you to retire."

One of them, Sola Opa (textiles, Scravelous) wrote back with, " I will definitely do that! I think it would be a good idea if you randomly interviewed a selection of people in the schoolyard one Sunday. I don't believe that you will get a negative response from one person!!"

He is elegant, gracious and gentle."

John Millen(10 year exhibitor at the market, retired) He wrote that one of his favorite activities on a slow Saturday was playing chess with Vernon,"I have fond memories of Vernon and I plus Winn (a Vietnamese artist at the market) playing intense games of Chinese chess oblivious of most of what was going on around us. Even in the dead of Winter, we would play all day long on Saturdays huddled next to the portable gas heater. Winn taught us how to play and we noticed immediately the philosophic differences between Chinese chess and Western chess. Of particular note was the fact that there was no Queen in Chinese chess. We had great fun talking about that!"

Vernon Burnett on Eastern Market:
" It comes into being once a week and vanishes with the Sunday sunset. You can search far and wide but you won't find another exactly like it. There is a unique meld of Cultures, serendipitous encounters, and an unprecedented collage of personalities. Because it occurs once a week, one can't wait for the next occurrence, which provides the excitement of continuing an interrupted conversations, or seeing an old friend. Being a center of shopping and communal activity, it is alive with aromas, street sounds, voices, and musical melodies. We keep returning, like pinching ourselves, to see if it's real."

Vernon Burnett and Nguyen Cao Nguyen playing chess at Market 5 Gallery Eastern Market

"Wow! That's a young Vernon and Nguyen Cao Nguyen.

Every Saturday and Sunday we'd play Chinese Chess, for hours sometimes. People would watch, trying to figure out what the game was. The board and pieces aren't representative of western chess. A fantastic game taught by Master Painter and Chinese chess player Nguyen Cao Nguyen. That's the kind of inter-cultural learning and experience that thrived for years as a result of John's and Tom's openness to creating an international ambience at the market. Those days are gone forever..."

*Mr. Burnett tells wonderful stories about many folks he has come across and worked with at Eastern Market. One of the most touching stories is about Rudy Coates and "Market Joe". But I will let Vernon tell you that story when you come by the market. I had to ask him one question, I asked, "Why do the good guys wear hats?" For example, Johh Harrod, Rudy Coates, Charles Ellis, David Wright, Donald Kenndy and Tom Rall. Just to throw a few names out there of hat wearing dudes. Vernon replied that, " Good guys wear hats for several reasons: Fashion Statement; Vanity (Hide Balding Head); Protection From Sun; Protection From The Hawk; and as a weapon `a la James Bond."

In additon, one thinks, perhaps, they ware hats to hide slightly dented and tarnished halos or ...

The sweet potatoes

It is fall on the east coast and that means harvest time with many local and national holidays approaching. Have you had your sweet potatoes lately. Or as I grew up calling them yams. Knopp Farm and Greenhouses at Eastern Market is one of this regions largest grower's of the spud. They are wonderful fried, baked(with butter) boiled, pureed or candied. Hear is Mr. Knopp on his farm digging up a good one.
