Eco-Justice Ministry: The Early Years
White Violet Center for Eco-Justice on Storytellers
This week's "Storytellers" piece comes from Sr. Sullivan of Indiana. She is a founding director of White Violet Center for Eco-Justice.
"Sitting on the front porch one summer evening in 1991, I was complaining to my housemate, Sister Nancy Nolan, then our general superior, about the chemicals being pumped into our farmland, the loss of our connection to the land- so much a part of our heritage from Saint Mother Theodore Guerin herself- and the seeming lack of attention that we were giving to the devastating environmental issues of the time.
I received a long "look" from Nancy followed with the words, "Well, if you know what we can do about it, tell us!"

Boosting Global Food Security
U.S. Law Aims to Improve Lives Worldwide
Last week, President Barack Obama signed the Global Food Security Act, enacting new legislation that was passed by the U.S. Congress with broad support earlier in July.
International agencies fighting hunger expressed their great appreciation, stating that this legislation will help strengthen food assistance programs throughout the world in the years ahead.
"The United States is helping to put and even stronger emphasis on how food security and economic development are intertwined, while stressing the central role of small-scale family farmers in the fight against hunger and poverty," said UN-FAO Director-General, José Graziano da Silva.

AFBF video: "Ag Labor and Border Security Require Balanced Approach"
Immigration Reform Must Keep Key Ideas In Mind
American Farm Bureau Federation has produced a short video highlighting the pressing need for immigration reform in our country. Click here to watch the video.
AFBF President Zippy Duval says, "
Our country's going need to make up its mind. We're either going to import our agricultural labor or we'll have to import our food. Most Americans would opt for food grown on our own soil by American farmers. To keep that option viable, we must act soon," Duvall said.
"When we fix immigration reform, we need to remember what America really is: It's a melting pot," Duvall said. "All of us come from another culture. We came, or our ancestors did, looking to work hard and build a better life for our families."
Catholic Rural Life works for ethical food and agricultural practices, including just treatment for farm workers. Read more about this here.

Prayers for Persecuted Christians
CRL Joins Its Prayers for Fr. Jacques Hamel
Catholic Rural Life joins its prayers and sorrow with the rest of the world regarding the martyrdom of
Fr. Jacques Hamel.
We pray for the repose of his soul, for the healing of the nun critically wounded in the attack, and for all those around the world who are persecuted for their religious faith. As
Msgr. Olivier Ribadeau Dumas, secretary-general of the French bishops' conference said, "We believe that evil and violence will not have the upper hand". And as Archbishop Lebrun said, "The Catholic Church can take up no weapons other than those of prayer and brotherhood among people of goodwill".
