B eloved,
G race to you and Peace from our Lord Jesus Christ.

We, followers of Christ, are those who are practiced in singing to the Lord.  In New Mexico 75% of our population identify as Christian.  If we all joined together we would be a mighty choir 1.5 million strong!
This weekend I will be singing with a slightly smaller but still potent choir.  The New Mexico Peace Choir has over seventy voices. Sometimes we sing in unison, sometimes we sing in eight-part harmony, sometimes we sing with our talented accompanist on the grand piano, and sometimes we sing a' Capella.  No matter how we sing, or what genre the music, the importance of following the director is paramount.
When I become distracted, lose my focus on the one directing us, I fall out of step with my fellow singers.  My individual sound, however melodic, becomes a discordant note in an otherwise lovely or forceful piece of music.  By keeping our eyes on the one who unifies us, we are able to turn our individual slight voices into a mighty stream of sound that can soothe a soul or inspire a movement.
As I travel visiting small churches and joining large convocations, I see us coming together in a potent stream of faithful living that makes a difference.  Churches across the state are having an impact lifting up the dignity of all: providing support and sanctuary for immigrants; creating employment opportunities; teaching children in countless vacation bible schools; and holding public officials accountable for the common good.
Our impact is strengthened as we join together and keep our eyes on Christ Jesus, the one who leads us. In this newsletter you will find ways to join together to make a difference-this week and beyond.
Each Sunday when we gather, may we open our mouths and sing joyfully - for our God, for our calling: to heal the wounded, to break the bonds of oppression, to tear down dividing walls, to set captives free and to bring Good News of the abundant love of God and the grace of our Lord Christ Jesus to all.
