D o not worry about anything, but in everything
by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving
let your requests be made known to God.  And
the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding,
will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
 -   Philippians 4:6-7

T o the Churches of New Mexico
B eloved,
G race to you and Peace from our Lord Jesus Christ.

In these times, we are confronted with a daily diet of uncertainty and conflict in our national and local body politic. The climate has given rise to a malaise of apprehensions and doubt.  Some are paralyzed by their fears, unable to respond to the seemingly interminable mêlée. But we are given a teaching that can help us.  We are invited, through prayer, to let go of caustic messages and fearful projections of the future. We are invited to leave these behind so that we are free to serve God and serve the people with all our time, talent, and gifts.
In the darkest days, after the crucifixion, the Spirit was poured out on the disciples, men and women, who had gathered and were "constantly devoting themselves to prayer" (Acts 1:12-14).  Let this encourage us not to lag in our practice of prayer - both individual and communal. Let us lift to God the many challenges that New Mexico faces in these days, and petition for the power and vision to respond with imagination and sustained vigor to the needs of our communities.
As we move into summer's heat, may we be spurred on in our mission and witness by the blazing vitality of the Holy Spirit of Pentecost. May we remember again in this season that we are emissaries of the Divine who bids us go into all the world in Jesus' name.  May we claim our commission: to heal the wounded, to break the bonds of oppression, to tear down dividing walls, to set captives free and to bring Good News of the abundant love of God and the grace of our Lord Christ Jesus to all.
