Dear library patrons and friends,
This month we announce the long awaited groundbreaking for our new library building project, as well as the establishment of the Edgartown Public Library Youth Group (ELYG); open to all 6th-12th graders. A dedicated group of teens have been meeting the first Wednesday of every month from 6:30-7:30 at the library over pizza and dessert. They plan to hold a number of fundraisers and teen-led programs for youth/teens throughout the year. Their first successful event included donations from 12 different local businesses and raised over $300 for teen programming. Their next event is an all night movie marathon for 6th-8th graders on Saturday, May 24th, 6pm-10am on Sunday morning. New members welcome. Questions? Contact Elyce Bonnell, [email protected]
Don't forget to check-out an exciting line up of youth programming for April, including pinterest inspired crafts on half-days and school vacation week. Our adult film series Movies About Movies is sure to be well-attended. Come early to get a seat!
In honor of our Annual Town Meeting on Tuesday, April 8, we plan to show our regular Tuesday night film at 7pm, but we be stopping regular library services at 6:30 pm. Be sure to say hello to library staff at Town Meeting.

Monday, March 24 was a long-awaited day for Edgartown. Golden shovels dug into the dirt at the site that soon will be home to the new Edgartown Free Public Library.
Library volunteers and staff, members of the building committee, selectmen, students and officials from the Edgartown School, and leaders of the Friends of the Edgartown Library were gathered for the symbolic launching of the new library's 15-month construction phase.
Roberts Way along the edge of the building site has been closed for the duration of the construction project. Save the date for a community celebration of the library project, on Saturday, May 3 at 2pm.

For the Gift of $110,000
On March 25, the day after our groundbreaking ceremony, the trustees of the Edgartown Library received a donation of $110,000 from the Edgartown Library Foundation. This gift is a big help for the library building project. The building committee had been working with a list of priority "add-ons" which will improve the quality of the new building, including acoustical tile and hardwood flooring, and the donation from ELF ensures that these elements can be included in the library project.

Film Programs

The library's spring series of Tuesday evening films, entitled Movies About Movies," is presenting eight award-winning films -- each one set in the context of the great dream machine that is the movie industry. April's opening film is Broken Embraces, a 2009 film from Spain's Pedro Almodovar, a tale of suspense intrigue and melancholy romance that sparkles with the director's trademark visual brilliance. Up on April 8 is a cult classic, The Stunt Man, directed by Richard Bush (1980) and featuring Peter O'Toole in a darkly comic thriller about the world of movie-making. On April 15, we'll present The Artist, the French film that swept the Academy Awards in 2012 -- the engaging story of one star hitting the heights and another hitting the skids, told entirely without sound.
On April 22 the "Movies About Movies" series presents 8 1/2, one of director Federico Fellini's most brilliant and influential films, boasting a seminal performance by Marcello Mastroiani. We wrap up the month on April 29 with Sunset Boulevard, the classic 1950 film from director Billy Wilder, with its inspired performances and rich cinematography
 Also this April, we're concluding a series that started on March 23 -- Tea and Downton, a marathon showing of Season Three of the hit PBS serial drama Downton Abbey. Afternoon tea is served during each program of this series, which is presented at 1 p.m. on April 6 and 13. Reservations are required for Tea and Downton -- please call the library at 508-627-4221.

Stamp Crafts: April 4 & 25

April in the Children's Room
April opens with two special crafts programs on the first weekend of the month in our Children's Room, and a lively list of activities is planned for the week of school vacation.
On Friday, April 4, at 3 p.m., children can make all sorts of creative things from the library's collection of stamps and inkpads.
On Saturday, April 5, we're hosting two sessions of a craft activity that explores Aztec art and involves making an Aztec sun ornament from sculpted sand. This program is held from 2 to 3 p.m. and again from 3 to 4 p.m.
April 10- we'll be celebrating the half-day of school by making smoothies- we provide the fruit, just bring your appetite and get ready to design your own smoothie!, 12:30-1:30 p.m.
On Friday and Saturday, April 11 and 12, macaroni bead necklaces are the crafts project -- at 3 p.m. both days.
April 14- another half-day of school, we'll be dying and decorating fruity scented Easter Eggs, 12:30 p.m.
April 16- We'll be celebrating the last half-day in April by showing an action packed "nutty" comedy, featuring a mischievous squirrel with a mission: to find the tastiest nuts for winter. When he discovers a whole store filled with his favorite food, he plans a heist of nutrageous proportions. But the place turns out to be owned by ruthless bank robbers, so it's up to Surly and his furry friends to stop the nearby bank heist and save the town. Movie and popcorn at 12:30 pm.
Patriots Day paper crafts are the activity at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 18. In another Patriots Day activity from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 19, kids will make their own tin lanterns.
We're planning activities every day of school vacation week, beginning with Triangle crafts from noon to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22 (the library is closed April 21 for Patriots Day).
On Wednesday, April 23, we're showing a favorite children's movie, Everyone's Hero, on the big screen at 3 p.m.
On Thursday, April 24, join us in the Children's Room 3 p.m. to make painted stone men and creatures -- this is a great family activity, and be sure to wear your paint-friendly clothes.
Our stamp and inkpad crafts program (see April 4) will be repeated on Friday, April 25, at 3 p.m.
And on Saturday, April 26, we wrap up the month with a Fairy Party at 3 p.m. -- complete with stories, refreshments and fairy wings. Feel free to wear fairy costumes if you have them.

 Library Expands
Magazine Collection From Antiques & Fine Arts and Birdwatching to Tennis Magazine and Young Rider, the Edgartown Public Library has recently added more than two dozen magazines to its subscription list. The library still gets the old standbys, but with these new subscriptions the number of titles in the periodicals collection has expanded to nearly 140.Some of the new magazines were chosen to fill gaps in the library's collection, according to Debbie Strauss, the new circulation supervisor. Several new subscriptions (including Rug Hooking and Flying Models) were donated by patrons. Others were added after the library invited the community, last year, to suggest new magazine titles for the collection. |
