Steel Arrives
Steel Arrives on Site 7/29/14

Dear library patrons and friends,

The new Edgartown Library building project is progressing rapidly. Structural steel has been delivered and installation has begun. We will are compiling a book of photographs to document the project. If you have taken any pictures, please email them to us, and we will add them to our book (director@edgartownlibrary.org).

Here's the latest time-lapse video of progress at the building site. Just click the image to watch the clip:

Our moveable mural project by muralist Margot Datz is nearing completion, and we want to make sure you have a chance to participate. Do you have a friend or family member who you would like to honor? Perhaps, for their birthday? Consider donating to the Above & Beyond Fund for the new library, by "naming" a book on our mural. Choose their favorite book title or allow them to choose a title of their own. Call to learn more 508.627.4221

All our library programs are generously supported by the Friends of the Edgartown Library. We hope you will consider making a donation to the Friends.

Free Music on the Library Lawn
Sabrina's powerful vocals open the August series.
Sounds Like Summer, the library's series of free concerts on the front lawn, launched on July 8 and has been blessed with rain-free weather throughout its first four weeks.

The series, underwritten by the Friends of the Edgartown Library, continues with four lively performances in August -- all of them lasting an hour, all of them on a Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. This makes for a great family outing: Bring lawn chairs or blankets, if you like, and enjoy the music.

Our slate of August concerts is as follows:

Tuesday, August 5: Sabrina & the Groovers.

Tuesday, August 12: The Grateful Dread.

Tuesday, August 19: Johnny Hoy & the Bluefish.

Tuesday, August 26: Jon Zeeman's Jazz Trio.
Enjoy an hour with bluesman Johnny Hoy on August 19.
Book Group Looks Ahead to August and September
The Edgartown Library book group enjoyed its July discussion of Zeitoun by Dave Eggers. Up for discussion this month is Sylvia Plath's book, The Bell Jar, at 2 p.m. on August 20. Looking ahead, the group will take up Jess Walter's book, Beautiful Ruins, at 2 p.m. on Sept. 17.

We have copies of these books to read at the library desk, and gatherings of the book group are open to all.
Wednesday Evenings in August:
Presenting the Library's Island History Series
Wednesday nights in August, the Edgartown Library is collaborating with the Harbor View Hotel -- we and the hotel are the historic bookends of North Water Street -- to present four special adult programs featuring Island authors. Island history and natural history is the theme; the first two programs are being held at the library and the last two in the Menemsha Room of the Harbor View. Here's the lineup:

Wednesday, August 6 -- 7 pm at the library:

Author Suzan Bellincampi presents her new book, Martha's Vineyard: A Field Guide to Island Nature. Ms. Bellincampi is the director at Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary in Edgartown, a facility of the Mass Audubon Society. In her book, she takes readers both on the favorite Island trails and behind the scenes, explaining what the natural Vineyard has to offer. The book includes trail guides to six of the favorite walks on the Island, and sketches of the flora and fauna on the Vineyard, to help you recognize the plants and animals that call the Island home.

Wednesday, August 13 -- 7 pm at the library:

Authors Tom Dresser, Herb Foster and Jay Schofield present their new book, Martha's Vineyard in World War II. Here's the story of how this small, tightknit island community was transformed by World War II. From rationing and blackouts to a military presence in Chilmark, the war was brought home to the residents of the island in myriad ways. In the air, pilots flew training missions from the Martha's Vineyard Naval Auxiliary Air Facility. At sea, ferryboats served as hospital ships in the D-Day invasion, while enemy submarines lurked offshore. Mock invasions were undertaken by military forces from across Vineyard Sound, and remote sites were used for training missions and bombing practice.

Wednesday, August 19 -- 7 pm at the Harbor View:

In tonight's program, author Nis Kildegaard presents his new book from the Vineyard Stories imprint, Harbor View: The Hotel That Saved a Town. Illustrated with contemporary images by beloved Island photographer Alison Shaw as well as with a wealth of historic material, it's the story of Edgartown's first hotel, an enterprise more civic than commercial that was started in 1891 to pull the town out of its economic doldrums, and of its surprisingly eventful history since then.

Wednesday, August 26 -- 7 pm at the Harbor View:

Author Tom Dunlop and television producer John Smith present the latest fruits of a remarkable undertaking sponsored by the Vineyard Gazette: The Historic Movies of Martha's Vineyard Project. Mr. Dunlop and Mr. Smith will present never-before-seen historic film clips that share and preserve the story of Martha's Vineyard.
Viva Verdi: Opera Appreciation Program Concludes
Susan Grunthal, from the Taconic Opera, concludes her listening course on Giuseppe Verdi this September. She'll host three sessions: at 6:30 pm on Tuesdays, Sept. 2 and 9, and at 1:30 pm on Sunday, Sept. 7.

Verdi's final operas, some of his most magnificent, are Aida, Don Carlos, Otello and Falstaff.  Join us for some glorious listening and a key to understanding the great Verdi.

Library Friends Sponsor Second Annual 5K Run
At the start of last summer's race on Pennywise Path.
Last year, the Friends of the Edgartown Library sponsored a new sports and fund-raising event, the first-ever Pennywise Path Walk/Run to the site of the new Edgartown Library. It was so successful, attracting a field of 100 runners and walkers, that the Friends have decided to hold the second annual event this Labor Day, Sept. 1.

The event is a 5K run or walk, depending on your mood and fitness level, which begins on a shady trail -- Pennywise Path outside of the village center -- and winds through the woods until it connects with the bike path for the final mile to the destination at the Edgartown School, where our new town library is being constructed. For the more serious runners, you might want to know that this is a USATF-sanctioned event.

Advance registration will begin in mid-August -- look for posted forms on the library website. Day-of-race registration will be held on Sept. 1 beginning at 9 a.m., with runners shuttled by bus to the starting line for a 10 a.m. start on their route back into town.

Registration fees are $20 for adults and $10 for kids in advance, plus an extra $5 per person on race day. The first 200 runners at the finish will get a commemorative T-shirt bearing the winning design created by a child at the Boys' and Girls' Club.
