Dear library patrons and friends,

Summer is the season of special programs in venues across Martha's Vineyard, and the Edgartown Library is no exception. On every Tuesday evening from July 8 through the end of August, we're presenting programs of live music from favorite Island bands on the library's front lawn. And between now and Labor Day, every Wednesday night but one is booked with a special program -- from a talk on Island gravestones to a night of historic home movies and several presentations by authors of new books on Vineyard subjects.

All our library programs are generously supported by the Friends of the Edgartown Library. We hope you'll consider making a donation to the Friends.

Work nears completion on library footings.
Building a solid foundation for our new library.

Meanwhile, just a few blocks from our current campus on North Water Street, good progress is being made on the new library construction project. The foundation will be completed in the week ahead, and the first large shipments of framing steel for our new library are expected during the last week of July. By the time school reopens for Edgartown's elementary students in early September, the framed shape of the new library should be clearly visible. We invite you to stay up-to-date on our progress by liking us on Facebook.

Please contact me directly with any questions: director@edgartownlibrary.org.

Warmly,

Jill Dugas Hughes

Book Group Meets in July, Looks Ahead to August
The Edgartown Library book group enjoyed its discussions of Martha's Vineyard in World War II, and of the novel, Defending Jacob, in June. Up for discussion at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 16, is Zeitoun by Dave Eggers, a true account of a family's adventures during and after Hurricane Katrina. Looking ahead, the group plans to discuss Sylvia Plath's book, The Bell Jar, at 2 p.m. on August 20.

We have copies of these books to read at the library desk, and gatherings of the book group are open to all.

Wednesdays in July: From Gravestones to Book Talks
Wednesdays in summer are our nights for engaging programs aimed at our grown-up audience. We encourage you to check the calendar on our library's main web page regularly -- and we invite you to enjoy these three Wednesday evening programs scheduled for July:

Wednesday, July 9 -- 7 pm:
Elizabeth St. John Villard, Island tour guide, historian, Chappaquiddick ferry captain and expert on the cemeteries of Martha's Vineyard, gives a free, illustrated talk entitled "Gravestones of Edgartown.

Wednesday, July 23 -- 6:30 pm:
In tonight's free program, Deena Maerowitz will lead parents and students through the college admissions process, drawing upon her experience as a former Associate Director of Admissions at Columbia Business School, and her years as a lawyer and social worker focusing on educational issues impacting teenagers. She will cover topics including what to do when, college admissions priorities, extra curriculars, financial aid, testing information, essays and finding the best college fit.

Wednesday, July 30 -- 7 pm:
Author Jib Ellis gives a presentation on his new caper novel, Bandstand. In its review of the book, the Vineyard Gazette writes: "Though flirting loosely with an Ian Fleming plot formula, Bandstand at times moseys into capricious, highly entertaining dabbles of character depictions, comic antics, casual love making and breakfast menu options before gathering a commanding momentum and resonating with an explosive climax fit for a Spielberg big payoff thriller."
