Dear library patrons and friends,

If Memorial Day weekend was any indication, the library is poised to have a busy summer. Don't forget that we're open on Mondays now -- our full summer hours are posted below.

The new library building project is moving forward rapidly, despite a short delay due to water found during excavation. Our Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners representative recently came for a site visit and was pleased with construction progress. Stay up-to-date on our progress by liking us on Facebook.

Hallway mural by Margot Datz Many opportunities still exist for donors to participate in funding "Above and Beyond" items and upgrades for the new library. One of those opportunities is the remarkable trompe l'oeil mural in the entrance of our library, painted by artist Margot Datz -- for a donation of $100, you can have the title of your choice painted onto the spine of one of Margot's imaginary books.

Our library programs are generously supported by the Friends of the Edgartown Library. We hope you'll consider making a donation to the Friends.

Please contact me directly with any questions: [email protected].

Warmly,

Jill Dugas Hughes

-- And finally, this teaser: All the libraries of Martha's Vineyard start their summer reading programs in July, and the grand kick-off is a program sponsored by the Martha's Vineyard Library Association in West Tisbury on Saturday, July 5. The poster with details is below. (Meanwhile at the Edgartown Library, we're working on a colorful brochure detailing our summer reading program for kids. We'll have it available at the front desk, and on our website, in the days ahead.)

Book Group Meets in June -- Twice!
The Edgartown Library book group so enjoyed its discussion of Laura Hillenbrand's Unbroken in May that we scheduled two meetings for two Wednesdays this June. On June 4 the group will meet to discuss the new local history, Martha's Vineyard in World War II, by Thomas Dresser, Herb Foster (one of our Library Trustees) and Jay Schofield. (Don't be surprised if at least one of the authors pays our group a visit.)

On June 25, the group will gather again to discuss William Landay's novel, Defending Jacob

We have copies of both books to read at the library desk, and these sessions are open to all. Both meetings are set for 2 p.m.
We're Looking for Great Summer Help

The Edgartown Library is looking to hire part-time, paid summer help. Click this link for information -- and if you're interested and feel you are qualified, please submit your completed employment application, resume, and cover letter by June 21.

In addition, we're looking for teen volunteers to help with our July and August library programs. Here's information about this program.

Hey, Don't Make a Face at Those Vegetables!
And now for something completely different:

Eric Alexander of our library staff, the father of a school-age certified picky eater, is leading a program entitled "From Yucky to Yummy" at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, June 16. He'll have a variety of interesting things for parents and kids to taste, and hopes to encourage a conversation about involving your children in being more adventurous and open about the foods they try.

All are welcome.

Weekly Drop-in Art Group Forms
Donna Blackburn, the resident artist of our library staff, is organizing a new, drop-in art group meeting here at the library on Mondays at 11 a.m. -- beginning June 2 and continuing through the summer. At this weekly gathering, we hope to foster sharing of ideas and learning of new techniques in a relaxed atmosphere. Bring your supplies and materials in your favorite media, and continue with a work-in-progress or start something new. No registration is required.
