Staff News from Your Library

Her colleagues at the Edgartown Library bid goodbye and good wishes at the end of May to our circulation supervisor of the past two years, Debbie Strauss (pictured in green at right). Elyce Bonnell (pictured appropriately as Wonder Woman in this image from Halloween) celebrated the fifth anniversary of her employment at the library on June 1, and simultaneously stepped into the circulation supervisor role.

Our director since June of 2012, Jill Dugas Hughes, announced last month that she will be leaving the library at the end of August and moving with her family to New York State. Jill has ably ushered the library through a period of challenging transition -- the construction of our $10 million new library building.  For the next three months she will continue in her current role, overseeing day-to-day operations, serving as the Project Director for the soon to be opened library building project, helping the Board of Trustees to search for and select a new Library Director, and ensuring a smooth transition to new leadership. She will continue to work with the library until the completion and transition to the new library, set to open this fall -- and we wish her all the best in whatever she undertakes next.

There will be music, refreshments, reports on activities of the Friends, updates on the building project -- even opportunities to join this wonderful band of library supporters. Everyone is welcome.
June Events in the Children's Room

The Children's Room has a busy calendar of Saturday events this May, leading up to the grand opening celebration (on June 27) of the Vineyard libraries' summer reading initiative. Here's the  lineup:

Saturday, June 6, 2 pm: Join us for a super LEGO Make-It Party from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Children's Room today. There will be plenty of LEGO building materials for all ages. Drop in and create a project to put on display here at the library.

Saturday, June 13, 3 pm: The Teddy Bears Picnic, a popular library tradition, will be held this afternoon on the front lawn. If the weather is wet, we'll gather in the Children's Room. Bring your favorite stuffed toy, and something to sit on if you wish, and join in the celebration.

Saturday, June 20, noon to 4 pm: Drop in anytime this afternoon and make your Dad a mug for Father's Day. We'll have all the supplies on hand for this craft project program -- all you need to bring is your imagination.

Saturday, June 27, 11 am: The public libraries of Martha's Vineyard launch this summer's reading program with an appearance by entertainer "Jungle Jim" at the New Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury. The performer will present his "Superhero Training Program" for children from ages three through 10 years. Admission is $3 per person, plus a dollar for face-painting if you're in the mood.
