Dear library patrons and friends,

As the snow falls, we are grateful to have the warmth of the library. Come on by to have a steaming cup of coffee and talk -- you can pick up a good book or movie to entertain your family during the next blizzard.

Spring can't come soon enough! (Officially, the equinox arrives at 6:45 p.m. on Friday, March 20.)

Friends of the Library visit the Staff/Friends Lounge.
Light pours into the clerestory windows of our new Children's Room.

Enjoy this month's newsletter.

Warmly,

Jill Dugas Hughes

Free Spring Class: American Sign Language

Elyce Bonnell of the library staff will offer a free seven-week course, Introduction to American Sign Language, here at the library on Wednesdays, beginning on March 18, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Class size is limited, so please call the library to sign up. This is an adult program, wrapping up on April 29, and all materials will be provided.

All Roads Lead to Library's
March & April Film Series

If you've been feeling stir-crazy after this winter of storms and cabin fever, we've got just the thing for you: Hit the Road, our film series beginning March 10 and continuing on Tuesday nights right into April. All screenings start at 7 p.m. and please note: these programs are for adults. (We close the children's room shortly before each film begins and bring a cart full of the best new materials upstairs for our young patrons.)

Here's the March lineup of films:

March 10: Central Station

Directed by Walter Salles, this award-winning 1998 film from Brazil transcends road-movie cliches.

March 17: The Trip

From director Michael Winterbottom (UK, 2011), here's a droll satire about fame with two guys engaging in intense one-upsmanship all over the English Lake District.

 March 24: North by Northwest

Alfred Hitchcock at his best (which is very good) is well assisted here by Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint in this classic that superbly combines suspense, comedy and sex.

March 31: Stranger Than Paradise

Director Jim Jarmusch's breakout film is wry, dry and the most dead-pan of comedies (US, 1984).

Book Group Meets
The Edgartown Library book group meets on Wednesday, March 18 at 2 p.m. to discuss Betty Smith's novel, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. This richly-plotted narrative is the story of three generations in a poor but proud American family, and a detailed, unsentimental look at urban life at the beginning of the 20th century.

We have copies of this book available at the library desk, and gatherings of the book group are open to all. The book club, led by Director, Jill Dugas Hughes, meets monthly.
Opera Club Meets
Sunday, March 8

The Edgartown Library continues its monthly gatherings of the Opera Club, for all those who love (and would like to learn more about) the art of classical singing.

At 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 8, the library will present a screening of Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin. Filmed live at the Metropolitan Opera, this performance soars with a dream cast including Anna Netrebko as Tatiana and Mariusz Kwiecien in the title role. Valery Gergiev is the conductor.

All adults welcome to this free program.
Let Them Decorate Cake!
Make this leprechaun cake in the March class.
Donna Blackburn's Cake of the Month Club meets for a seasonally-fitting session at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 14. Bring one 9-inch layer of cake for this adult program, and Donna will show you how to decorate it with a festive St. Patrick's Day theme.

Meanwhile, our knitting group continues to meet Saturday mornings at 10:30 a.m. -- and no advance signup is necessary. Just bring your latest project along and join in.
DIY Upcycle
Jewelry Class Meets
For Two Tuesdays,
Beginning March 24

Resident Trashionista, Rachael Convery, will show you how to reuse, restyle, repurpose and chic up the unworn jewelry, orphaned beads and lonesome necklaces floating around your drawer in a free two-session workshop, offered here at the library on Tuesdays, March 24 and 31, from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Bring any jewelry you would like to redesign or use the library's supply of materials.  Space is limited, so call the library to sign up.

This is an adult program.
Slow Cooking Class
Wins Fans -- Fast

Adventures in Slow Cooking, the monthly class led by Virginia Munro of our library staff, is definitely the tastiest thing to happen here this winter. Heading into spring, on Thursday, March 26 at 1:30 p.m., Virginia will present her take on Dakjjim,  a sweet and savory chicken dish from Korea.

Space is limited for this free, adult program, so be sure to call the library to register.
Valentine crafts were a highlight of our
February children's programs.
March in the Children's Room

This month we're celebrating St. Patrick's Day on Saturday, March 14, with Irish Story Time at 10:30 a.m. and with crafts at 11 a.m.

Sometime that afternoon, weather permitting, a group of Irish Sword Dancers will visit the library. Their performance on North Water Street last year was a real treat.

On Saturday afternoons, March 7 and 21, we're holding drop-in crafts time from 2 to 4 p.m. with plenty of supplies on hand for children to have fun creating with.

And on the last Saturday of the month, March 28, we'll have Easter Egg crafts from 2 to 4 p.m. -- decorating plastic eggs and filling them with candy treats.
