Dear library patrons and friends,

We hope you will enjoy our November line-up of events. We have something for everyone, ranging from cake decorating to learning another language with your preschooler.

Simultaneously, we have been working hard to prepare for our move to the new library, which is coming along nicely. Window installation began this week. We should be ready to move in this summer. A snapshot of the progress can be seen below in the latest time lapse video.

Amigos Program, Opening Nov. 5,
Fosters Community Connections
Here at the library, we're still accepting sign-ups for Amigos, a joint program between the Friends of the Edgartown Library and the Rotary Club of Martha's Vineyard, with additional grant support by the Martha's Vineyard Savings Bank. This program launches on Nov. 5 at the library. The format is a pajama story-hour and family supper, from 6 to 7 p.m. on eight Wednesday nights. There will be stories and songs in two languages -- English and Brazilian Portuguese -- and the program will include high school student mentors.

Amigos is for children up to 6 years old, and their parents. To sign up, call the library at 508-627-4221. Here's the poster:

Fall Series Spotlights the Best
Of New International Films

The Library's International Film Series is presenting terrific new films on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. through Dec. 2. Please note, these programs are for adults; we close the children's room shortly before each film begins and bring a cart full of the best new materials upstairs for our young patrons.

Here's the lineup of films for November and December (please note that there's no screening on Nov. 11, Veterans Day):

November 4: The Empty Hours
With an insightful and talented director, a wisp of an idea becomes an engrossing coming-of-age story. (Directed by Aaron Fernandez: Mexico, 2014)

November 18: The Past
A gripping mystery cloaked in a family drama, this film from director Asghar Farhadi  is powered by fine performances. (France, 2013)

November 25: The Lunchbox
With subtle performances by its leads, charm and warmth, this almost love story satisfies like comfort food. (Directed by Ritesh Batra, India, 2013)

December 2: Two Lives
This new film from directors Georg Maas and Judith Kaufman is an absorbing and well-acted mystery which examines a woman's life splintered by war, peace, and politics. (Germany and Norway, 2014)

December 9: Volver

Combining magic, humor, sincere emotion and the supernatural in one gaudy package, this film features the beautiful Penelope Cruz at its center. Directed by Pedro Almodovar (2006).

Book Group Looks Ahead to Fall
The Edgartown Library book group meets on Wednesday, Nov. 19 at 2 p.m. to discuss The Light in the Ruins, by Chris Bohjalian.

We have copies of this book available at the library desk, and gatherings of the book group are open to all.
Opera Club Meets

The Edgartown Library has started an Opera Club for all those who love (and would like to learn more about) the art of classical singing.

At 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 16, the club will gather to enjoy a screening of the rarely seen documentary, Tosca's Kiss. Meet the inhabitants of the "Casa di Riposa" in Milan, a home for retired opera singers, founded and endowed by composer Giuseppe Verdi in 1896. Tosca's Kiss is a touching and humorous film about aging, art, and the inspiring power of music.

Join us for this special screening and learn about future Opera Club events. All adults are welcome.
BYO Cake and Decorate It --
(Gather for Knitting, Too)

Two of our popular adult programs, the Cake of the Month group and our weekly knitting group, continue to meet in November under the tutelage of Donna Blackburn of our library staff. The knitters gather downstairs with Donna every Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. The cake decorating class meets on Saturday, Nov. 22, at 2 p.m. -- please call ahead at 508-627-4221 if you're interested.
November in the Children's Room

This month, story hour programs in the Children's Room are offered every Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m., and Toddler Time programs every Saturday at 10 a.m.

Free drop-in crafts activities are held every Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. this month. We're offering a special craft project on Nov. 15, looking ahead to the new year: Join us for a drop-in project, making calendars for 2015 -- after all, it's just around the corner. Bring photos for calendar collages if you like, or decorate with materials we'll have on hand.
