Dear library patrons and friends,

October brings the return of some of our favorite seasonal programs -- please read below for news about our international film series, our weekly knitting group and our new cake-decorating class. This month we're also announcing the November launch of an innovative community outreach effort, the Amigos program.

Please don't forget, library programs are generously supported by the Friends of the Edgartown Library. We hope you will consider making a donation to the Friends.

Take a look at the progress photo of our new library, taken last week. The building should be weather tight this month, and masonry will begin shortly. Recently, I had a chance to stand on the second floor- WOW!

Your financial help is needed to fund upgrades and final touches such as the children's reading garden, children's indoor lighthouse and reading nook, cooking demonstration station, cafe furnishings, front and back entrance gardens, upgraded flooring for the community room, and a host of other wish-list items. Your tax-deductible contributions will be recognized in the new building, and funds will be administered by the elected Edgartown Library Board of Trustees.

We remain grateful for your support. The opportunities are endless. Thanks again for a great summer. We enjoyed seeing so many of of you!

Warmly,

Jill Dugas Hughes

Director

Amigos Program, Coming This November,
Fosters Community Connections
Amigos, a joint program between the Friends of the Edgartown Library and the Rotary Club of Martha's Vineyard, with additional grant support by the Martha's Vineyard Savings Bank, launches on Nov. 5 here at the library. The format is a pajama story-hour and family supper, from 6 to 7 p.m. on eight Wednesday nights. There will be stories and songs in two languages -- English and Brazilian Portuguese -- and the program will include high school student mentors.

Amigos is for children up to 6 years old, and their parents. To sign up, call the library at 508-627-4221. Here's the poster:

Fall Series Spotlights the Best
Of New International Films

The Library's International Film Series, starting on Oct. 14, presents eight terrific new films on Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. through Dec. 2. Please note, these programs are for adults; we close the children's room shortly before each film begins and bring a cart full of the best new materials upstairs for our young patrons.

Here, looking ahead into early November, is the early lineup:

October 14: In the House
Marvelous performances and wry humor drive this dark, tense film that combines fantasy and reality in most interesting ways. (Directed by Francois Ozon: France, 2013)

October 21: Like Father Like Son
Director Hirokazu Koreeda guides us through an emotional minefield with a story of bloodlines and nurturing instincts colliding when two babies are switched at birth. (Japan, 2014)

October 28: The Great Beauty
From director Asghar Farhadi, a gripping mystery cloaked in a family drama is powered by fine performances. (France, 2013)

November 4: The Empty Hours
With an insightful and talented director, a wisp of an idea becomes an engrossing coming-of-age story. (Directed by Aaron Fernandez: Mexico, 2014)
Book Group Looks Ahead to Fall
The Edgartown Library book group meets on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 2 p.m. to discuss Anita Shreve's novel, Testimony. Up for discussion on Nov. 19 is The Light in the Ruins, by Chris Bohjalian.

We have copies of these books available at the library desk, and gatherings of the book group are open to all.
Opera Club Forms

Opera lovers unite! The Edgartown Library is starting an Opera Club for all those who love the art of classical singing.

Our monthly activities will include opera on film, documentaries about opera, listening classes with Susan Grunthal from the Taconic Opera, and field trips to performances. Join us Sunday, Oct. 26 at 1 p.m. for our inaugural meeting when we will screen the film La Bohme, which stars singers Anna Netrebko and Rolando Villazon. All adults are welcome.
New Fall Programs Really Take the Cake
(They're Good for Sweaters, Too)

Donna Blackburn of our library staff launched a new program, the Cake of the Month group, on Sept. 23, and the frosted productions that resulted were quite remarkable. The class meets again on Saturday, Oct. 25, at 2 p.m. -- please call ahead at 508-627-4221 if you're interested.

Continuing this month, beginning and intermediate knitters are invited to gather at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday mornings. Bring a skein of four-ply worsted knitting yarn and a set of number 7 or 8 needles -- or if you've already started on a project, bring it along for sociability and support.
Crafts project for Oct. 25
October in the Children's Room

This month, story hour programs in the Children's Room are offered every Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m., and Toddler Time programs every Saturday at 10 a.m.

Free drop-in crafts activities are held every Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. this month. We're offering a special craft project for Oct. 25, the last Saturday of the month: join us to make your own trick-or-treat bags for Halloween. We'll supply all the materials -- you make the bag your own.
