Hail & Farewell: A Celebration Of Transition at the Library
|
Lisa Sherman and Jill Hughes cut the ceremonial cake. |
Even as staff scurried through the crowd, helping patrons print important documents and find the books they needed, we held a party at the library on the afternoon of Monday, August 31.
Hail and Farewell was the theme, and the occasion was a change in command. Patrons, staff, trustees and the Friends of the Library organization (which hosted the event) said goodbye and good luck to Jill Dugas Hughes, the library's director for the past three years. We also welcomed a library veteran -- most recently director of the little library at Aquinnah -- Lisa Horton Sherman, as the new director of the Edgartown Library.
Please greet Lisa the next time you're at the library, and wish her well in the overwhelming months ahead, as the new library building project enters its final stage.

Stories, Pirates and Skyscrapers:
September in the Children's Room
We had a busy summer in the children's department, with events that ranged from Jedi swordplay to visiting robots. In the summer reading program, 70 children took part -- 35 of them winning T-shirts for reading at least 10 books. Our top reader devoured 50 books this summer, and in all, our young readers consumed 412 titles.
Now it's time for young students to return to school. Here at the library, most of our children's programs will be held Saturdays now that school buses are abroad on Island roads. Here's the September rundown:
Wednesdays all through the month: Story Hour is held at the library at 10:30 a.m. with story readings, songs and Mother Goose rhymes. (Please enter by the side entrance.)
Saturday, Sept. 5 at 3 p.m.: Celebrate National Skyscraper Day with us by building your own towering lego-block creation. We'll decorate the library with children's skyscrapers in the days that follow.
Saturday, Sept. 12 at 3 p.m.: Join us for the library's traditional Teddy Bears Picnic -- bring your bear or other favorite stuffed friend and enjoy stories and jam sandwiches.
Saturday, Sept. 19 at 3 p.m.: Celebrate National Talk Like a Pirate Day (we're not making this up!) by making a pirate mask, hearing pirate stories and enlarging your vocabulary.
Saturday, Sept. 26: Join us for drop-in crafts from 2 to 4 p.m.
