And a New Season Begins
At the Edgartown Library
Sounds Like Summer, the library's series of free concerts on the front lawn,
concluded its well-attended 2016 run on August 30.
As we wind down from a summer that produced record attendance, we are shaking the sand out of our books and looking forward to the sublime shift that fall brings: backpacks, cooler temperatures and familiar faces. Our hottest months were packed with live music, Hamlet, opera, foreign films, Double Dutch, Frisbee golf, Vineyard Colors and jugglers, as well as talks on climate change, Lyme disease and astronomy.

Looking ahead, September brings something for just about everybody at the library: from opera to classic films, from author talks to community dance, a 5K run/walk event and even a children's clothing swap meet. And please note: with the school year beginning, we're planning activities for children in the after-school hours every school day this month.

We look forward to seeing you this September at your town's wonderful new library.

In Waning Days of Summer Break,
Library Plans Events for Kids

With just a few days remaining until school opens on Tuesday, Sept. 6, we've tried to fill the library calendar with fun for kids during summer's last gasp. Here's the roundup:

Thursday, Sept. 1, 2:30 p.m.: Mario Kart Racing
This is the repeat of a popular favorite -- an afternoon of racing on the big screen in our program room, with the Mario Kart game and the Wii machine.

Friday, Sept. 2, 10:30 a.m.: Rock Out on the Lawns
The library will hold its second Rock Out event, inviting kids to gather rocks from our pebble-strewn front lawn. We'll thank all the participants with free ice cream and hot dogs at noon. (If it's rainy, we'll hold this event on Saturday and show a movie inside at 2:30 p.m. instead.)

Saturday, Sept. 3 -- Movie (Or Rock Out event)
We'll show a children's movie at 2:30 p.m. -- and if the Rock Out event was rained out Friday, we'll hold it today.

Citizen Kane, the 1941 film written, directed by and starring the legendary Orson Welles, ranks on many lists as the greatest movie ever made. Watch it again on the library's big screen and be reminded why.

The library will present free screenings of Citizen Kane in our program room at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6. All adults are welcome.

The Opera Club's monthly feature screening for September is Gounod's Romeo et Juliette, presented at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10 on the big screen in our program room. From Salzburg, it's an elegant and vibrantly sung production with Rolando Villazon and Nino Machaidze in the leading roles. Staged by Bartlett Sher; Yannick Nezet-Seguin conducts. Please note that Saturday is a new day for Opera Club programs. All adults are welcome.

In other operatic news, we're delighted to report that Susan Grunthal of the Taconic Opera returns to the Edgartown Library with another opera listening class, this time on famous duets. Sessions are held at 6:30 p.m. on two Thursdays, Sept. 8 and 15. This two-part class is free and open to all adults, so come in for a transporting earful.
O n Sept. 14, Author James Reston Jr.
Presents
His Latest History, a Dramatic Account
Of Martin Luther and the Reformation

At 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 14, Island readers are in for a special treat. Celebrated historian James Reston Jr. will be here at the library that evening to discuss his latest book, Luther's Fortress: Martin Luther and His Reformation Under Siege.

Mr. Reston's narrative details the life of Martin Luther (1483-1546) during the months from April 1521 through March 1522 -- from Luther's self-defense at the Diet of Worms following the edict that declared him a heretic to his return to Wittenburg, where he first proposed the ideas that would lead to the Reformation. Library Journal declares this book "A fine, scholarly but accessible treatment of a key period in the life of one of the most influential persons in the history of Christianity."
Children's Clothes and Books Swap:
Friday & Saturday,  Sept. 16 & 17

Here's the plan:  Bring your gently used children's clothing (all sizes welcome), books or dvds, backpacks, sports equipment, and shoes to the Edgartown Library during library hours, before Wednesday, Sept. 14 , and receive a voucher to attend the Swap. Come back during library hours on Friday or Saturday, Sept. 16 or 17, and find some wonderful back to school items. Remember, you must bring your voucher to participate in the Swap!

Games, face-painting and activities for children will be available while parents swap.  Contact Elyce at the library,  508-627-4221,  for more information.
Author Jane Dreeben Presents
Her New Book on Vineyard Artists:
Saturday, Sept. 17, 3 p.m.

Jane Dreeben will discuss her book, The Urge to Create, in a free program at the library at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17. The book is a compilation of 50 essays created from interviews with Vineyard artists, along with their photographic portraits.

Writes the Vineyard Gazette in its feature review: " Ms. Dreeben spent three years on the book, and in the process created a work of art in itself. She embraced the idea of art as inclusive and broad. In other words, anyone who creates is an artist and most artists who persist have talent."
Gotta Dance: Library Film Series
Begins Wednesday, Sept. 21

This month and next -- beginning on the last day of summer, Sept. 21 -- the library will present a series of seven films on our program room's big screen, all of them celebrating the cinematic art of dance. All of the screenings but one (look for details below) start at 7 p.m. on Wednesday evenings. Here's the lineup:

Wednesday, Sept. 21:
Black Swan

This psychological melodrama, told with passionate intensity, gloriously and darkly absurd, stars Natalie Portman in an Oscar-winning performance. Directed by Darren Aronofsky (United States, 2010).

Saturday, Sept. 24 at 3 p.m.:
Afternoon of a Faun

In this matinee program, the only Saturday movie in our fall series, f ilmmaker Nancy Buirski crafts a mesmerizing portrait of Tanaquil Le Clercq, great prima ballerina of the New York City Ballet and muse to Ballanchine. (United States, 2014)

Wednesday, Sept. 28:
Top Hat

Here's perhaps the most enduring of the Astaire-Rogers films; the plot is silly, but the dancing sublime. Directed by Mark Sandrich
(United States, 1935
).

Wednesday, Oct. 5:
Tango

Director Carlos Saura captures the essence of a dazzling dance tradition  in a film that wafts dreamily through countless forms of tango magic. (Argentina, 1998)

Wednesday, Oct. 12:
Saturday Night Fever

There's some grit and intensity to the film, but most memorable are Travolta's moves and the Bee Gees soundtrack. Directed by John Badham (United States, 1977).

Wednesday, Oct. 19:
Pina

This film is an exhilarating experience, both in its celebration of Pina Bausch's groundbreaking work and in the thrilling way that director Wim Wenders captures it on camera. (Germany, 2011)

Wednesday, Oct. 26:
Strictly Ballroom
As the first screen effort from director Baz Luhrmann, the film has laughs, great dancing, and a sense of madness and mania running just below its surface. (Australia, 1992)
Library Book Club Is Back
