We're Closing Our Beloved Carnegie Library
With a Saturday Morning Ceremony on March 5
At the Carnegie library building, the Simpson art collection, one of Edgartown's treasures,
was taken down and prepared for its big move.
All friends and patrons of the Edgartown Library are invited to meet on the front lawn of the town's historic Carnegie library building at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 5, for a brief ceremony closing the building, followed by a walk to the new library site where refreshments will be served.

The ceremony at the North Water Street site is a moment to celebrate its 112 years of history serving Edgartown. A celebration of the new library next to the Edgartown School will be held at a later date this spring.

Fifteen minutes before Saturday's program, a free shuttle will pick up people who want to leave their vehicles at the Edgartown School parking lot, near the new library where the walk will conclude.

After the 5 p.m. closing at the Carnegie building on Friday, March 4, both library buildings - the old and the new - will be closed to the public until the move is complete and all the new facility's systems are ready for patrons. Late fines on materials due during the closure will be forgiven after the new library opens.

The entire process of moving and reopening is expected to take about three weeks. When the new library is ready for patrons, the opening will be announced on the library's web page, edgartownlibrary.org, and on its Facebook page.

Rain date for Saturday's event is at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 6.

The destination of Saturday morning's walk: the new library at 26 West Tisbury Road, beside the Edgartown School.

March Library Events, at the New Building
:

We've already scheduled a number of March programs -- and we hope that participants will bear with a bit of "moving-time" clutter.

AARP TAX ASSISTANCE

This month the library will participate in the Island-wide AARP Tax Aid Program. Volunteers, certified and trained under the program, will again offer free income tax preparation assistance,  with a special emphasis on taxpayers sixty and older, by appointment only.  They will be in our program room on the following dates: 3/14, 16, 19, 22 and 23.  Appointments may be scheduled through the Edgartown Council on Aging, The Anchors. Call Donna at 508-627-4368.

March 19 in the program room: Special Story Hour, with Mouse

Did you think our new library was too new to have mice? Think again! The Children's Department will hold a special story hour at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 19 in the program room with the popular storybook character from the children's book, "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie."

Democrats Caucus on March 26

Edgartown Democrats will caucus at 10:00 AM on March 26, 2016 at the Edgartown Library to elect 4 delegates and 3 alternates to the 2016 Massachusetts Democratic Convention to be held on June 4 in Lowell.  The caucus is open to all registered Democrats in Edgartown, and the Democratic Committee welcomes participants. Delegates will be divided equally between men and women, and all ballots will be written and secret. Youth, minorities, and people with disabilities who are not elected as delegates or alternates may apply to be "add-on" delegates. The Edgartown Public Library is handicapped accessible. Details on the rules can be found at www.massdems.org. The caucus is an open Democratic Party meeting; no person shall be denied admittance. The Democratic Committee will hold a short organizational meeting immediately following the caucus.  For more information, please contact Diane Drake, Chair of the Edgartown Democratic Committee, at [email protected].

Informational Session on March 30:
Edgartown's Plastic Bag Bylaw

The Vineyard Conservation Society has been working on a proposal to prohibit single-use plastic bags at grocery checkout.  They will hold an information session to address questions and concerns about this proposal, which will be presented as a draft bylaw at spring town meetings across the Island.
