Message from the Principal
Dear Edgerton Families,

As we start a new year, I would like to extend a warm welcome back to all students. I hope you enjoyed the time to relax and participate in some memorable activities with family and friends. I wish everyone a happy and healthy 2018!

There are a few events for parents coming up next week that you might be interested in. Whitnall continues to offer Parent Academy learning opportunities and the theme for this month has a social emotional focus. Parent Academy information is included below along with a link to sign up. Also, if you plan to attend the PTO meeting next week on Thursday, January 11th at 7 p.m., our Superintendent, Dr. Lisa Olson, will be joining us to share information about the upcoming district referendum and answer questions.

In January, we will continue our winter testing window for the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessment from the Northwest Evaluation Association. The MAP assessment requires a total of two to three hours per student (less for primary grades) and is scheduled over the course of a few days. We continue to measure academic growth in the areas of reading and math. Once testing is complete, you will receive a follow-up report of your child’s progress.

Our staff will also administer the Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS) to students in K4, K5, 1st, and 2nd grades over the next few weeks. Additionally, teachers in all grades will be conducting a mid-year reading benchmark assessment for each student. We hold grade level data meetings in January to assess progress for each student, monitor growth, and make collaborative instruction decisions for the second half of the school year. Our first semester ends January 19th. Please note that your child’s semester report card will be available through Infinite Campus Portal after this date. Feel free to contact Kay Larson at 414-525-8526 if you need login information.

We are excited to hold guided tours for families looking to register new K4 and K5 students on Friday, January 26 at either 9:15 am or 1:15 pm. An informational meeting is planned for new K4 students at 5:30 pm and new K5 students at 6:45 pm on Tuesday, January 30.  Current families with students enrolled in the Whitnall K4 program do not need to attend the K5 Information Night . Registrations for the 2017-18 school year will take place online beginning January 22, 2018. Click here for the enrollment site.

Finally, thank you for your support of the EES Student Council Toy Drive for Children's Hospital. In all, over 300 toys were donated and our Student Council representatives dropped them off at Children's Hospital before holiday break. Your generous gifts brought comfort to kids in the hospital and helped to ease their anxiety. Thanks for helping to make kids smile.
Important Safety Reminders
At EES, we make every effort to assure the safety of your children. Our doors are locked each morning after the students enter the building at 8:35 am. All visitors should enter through the main entrance (door #1), sign in and obtain a visitor’s pass. Parents and visitors should not enter the building through other doors at any time during the day. By following these procedures, students and staff can be assured that visitors have checked in at the office. Our goal is to provide a safe environment where your children can enjoy positive learning experiences. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping EES safe!

Also, we ask that you please say good bye to your child at the door and refrain from walking your child to their classroom. This will help the staff and students get their day started on time.
Coffee with the Principal
The next coffee with Mr. D’Acquisto is scheduled for Monday, January 15, 2018 from 8:45 am until 9:45 am. Please plan on stopping in to share ideas, ask questions and discuss current and upcoming events at Edgerton Elementary.

Emergency Closing Reminders
When severe weather or other emergency conditions exist so that it becomes necessary to close the school and/or dismiss early, parents will be notified using our Infinite Campus Messenger System. Please be sure that your email and phone contacts are current to ensure you are receiving these messages. Contact Kay Larson at 414-525-8526 with any Infinite Campus account questions.
The Whitnall School District also publishes closing information on the Whitnall website, Facebook, Twitter and through local radio and television stations. Please note that Whitnall is not part of MPS (Milwaukee Public Schools). Pay close attention to the closing announcements to be sure it includes the Whitnall School District. There may be instances when MPS is closed and Whitnall will remain open.
Also, an emergency closing card was sent home at the beginning of the year for all parents to fill out. This card informs staff members what procedure students should follow if it becomes necessary to close the school during the day. Please notify the school of any changes in phone numbers as they occur during the year. You may contact the school office to report these changes or to ask any questions. The phone number is 414-525-8900.
Cold Weather - Dress for It :)
Students will go outside when the temperature / wind chill is above 0 degrees. Please be prepared for the weather conditions by making sure you child has a warm winter jacket, hat, gloves, snow pants and boots. When snow arrives, students without boots and snow pants will only be able to play on the blacktop area. It is also a good idea to send an extra pair of socks along on those snowy days so your child can have dry feet after recess time..
