Message from the Principal
Dear Edgerton Families,

I hope all students and families enjoy the spring break and the opportunity to spend time with family and friends. After break, Edgerton students will take the Wisconsin Forward Exam. This is our third year taking this version of the state assessment that will be administered in English language arts and mathematics in grades 3 through 5, in science in grade 4, and in social studies in grade 4. Edgerton’s testing window will be April 12th through April 27th. This assessment gives us valuable information and our students always show maximum effort and concentration.

If you are traveling over the next several days, be safe. Take care,

Chris D’Acquisto

Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week
The week of April 9 -13 is Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week in Wisconsin. The National Weather Service in Wisconsin and Wisconsin Emergency Management are asking that everyone take time to go over their safety plans so that they will be ready if severe weather strikes. The time to prepare is before the storms hit. Edgerton Elementary staff will review safety plans with our students and will practice a tornado drill on Thursday, April 12th.
2018-19 Classroom Assignments
In the months of April and early May, we will begin to make next year's classroom placements. When developing classes, the staff considers a variety of criteria including academic and social abilities, needs and student learning styles. If you would like to share information about your child that would be beneficial to us as we develop classes for next year, please pick up a Student Information Sheet from the office or print off from the website. Forms will be available beginning Monday, March 5 and will be due back to school by Friday, April 13.
Placements are made in part on the basis of teacher recommendations, reading inventory, academic performance , as well as the criteria listed above. Parent requests for specific room placements may be considered if there is a valid reason for the request. Such requests should be submitted in writing no later than April 13. We do not encourage such requests, but recognize that special situations may exist and parents can provide input. Please understand that room placements are at the discretion of the Principal via staff input.
Jump Rope for Heart
Mr. La Rosa would like to thank everyone who participated in Jump Rope for Heart. Students learned the importance of heart-healthy habits - a foundation for the rest of their lives. Many students jumped in honor of relatives or family friends who have been affected by heart disease. Edgerton families - you are amazing! We raised $5,700 for the American Heart Association. They fund innovative research for new treatments, provide programs and services for survivors and their families, and help more of our loved ones lower their risk. Thank you again for your tremendous support!
Book Swap
We have started collecting gently used children's books and magazines for our annual book swap to be held in June. If you have any books you'd like to donate, please drop them off at the school office. This is a great event for EES. With enough donations, all students are able to take home several books to get them started with their summer reading! Thanks in advance for your donations!
Music Update
The K5 and grade 1 students have been busy singing and preparing to perform in early May. Mark your calendars for our spring concerts featuring music from the movies! The grade 1 concert is scheduled for Wednesday, May 2 and the K5 concert is scheduled for Thursday, May 3. Both concerts will begin at 9:15 am and will be held in the EES main gym. We look forward to seeing you!
All School Field Trip to the Zoo
We have started the planning for our all school field trip to the Milwaukee County Zoo. It is scheduled for Friday, June 1st. We will need many parent chaperones to help us out on this trip. All chaperones will be required to have an approved volunteer background check. You may complete this process online by clicking here. Please feel free to contact the school office if you have any questions. We look forward to sharing this fun day with all of you!
News from our Classrooms
Kindergarten
The kindergarten students have been working really hard all year learning to read! Once a month we get together with our fourth grade buddy class to read with each other. It's been really great to see the kindergarteners and fourth graders create a special bond over reading. They look forward to seeing their buddies outside at recess and in the hallways at school and are always wondering when our next reading buddy day is!
Core 4
The K4 Classes are participating in a “Partnership Classroom” program with First Stage this school year. On March 20 and 22 we had actor/teachers, Miss Emily & Miss.Kim came to our K4 classroom for an “Alphabet Detectives” program. The kids had fun learning some ‘actor’ terms and used their imagination and their bodies to create and form some of the letters of the alphabet. As we read and acted out part of a story ; we had to listen and watch for ‘clues’ to help solve the mystery of the story. We also had to help solve the mystery of “Who Stole the Cookies from the Cookie Jar”. It was a very engaging and fun time for the K4 kids. A BIG thanks to the generosity of our wonderful EES PTO for helping to fund some of the cost for this program!
Grade 4
Fourth grade classes have been studying the Wisconsin industries all year. Recently, students have been studying the paper, lumber and maple sugaring industries. Along with their studies in class, they have had some awesome opportunities to learn as a fourth grade community with Lumberjack Day and making handmade paper. Beyond the classroom, students traveled to the sugarbush at Ross Lodge to learn about maple sugaring with the Wehr Nature Center naturalists. A big thank you to our Edgerton PTO for supporting these fantastic learning opportunities.
Grade 5
Now that spring has arrived, the 5th graders will start to to think about their transition to the middle school. More information will be sent home with your child regarding specific events and class scheduling.
Students are also beginning their new science unit: Earth’s Place in the Universe. To start, these young scientists are using tools to try and prove why we experience day and night. The students are also looking forward to the 5th grade camping trip scheduled for April 25 - 27 at Upham Woods.
Art
First grade has been busy studying famous artists. Some of the artists include Vincent Van Gogh, Georges Seurat and Charles Demuth. Most recently we have been studying the life and artwork of Frida Kahlo. Frida Kahlo was tragically hurt in a bus accident and spent most of her life lying flat in bed. From there, she made most of her famous paintings. First grade spent an art class drawing and painting self-portraits like Frida, flat on the floor with mirrors under the seats! We learned a lot about the challenges she must have faced!
