President's Message

I hope you have had a great Spring and as we get into the Summer months I can’t help but stop and think about how lucky we are to live in a country like Canada. In a world seemingly full of terrorism and callous disregard for life I know I feel truly lucky to live here and call this country home.

As we approach Canada’s 150th birthday I hope we can all take some time to reflect on our great nation with the freedom, tolerance, and positive energy that makes our country such a good place to live, work, and play.

The CIPH Edmonton Region was privileged to have a tour in April of the Rig Hand Distillery in Nisku. This was a great event with some excellent networking opportunities for the members. It was interesting to learn about the distillation process for their signature products like apple pie corn moonshine and bRUM (sugar beet rum). We also held a successful AGM at this event with a big thank you to everyone who attended!

On May 10th we had our annual golf tournament at the Ranch with a great turn out and no frost delays! It was an excellent day even if we were all still shaking off the rust from a long winter.  We recently completed our board planning session for the new season and it was quite energizing. We have a bunch of new Directors joining our board this year with Michelle Sicard (Points West Marketing), Katrina Agusto (Wolseley), Kevin Garner (Emco), and Chris Gaucher (Ipex) now giving their time and energy to the CIPH. It is always great to have new perspectives and new energy added into the mix!

On June 15th we had an awesome group of people volunteer for a day at the Habitat for Humanity Carter Place build in Edmonton. This community will provide 58 families a home upon completion. It is named in honor of former President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalyn Carter who are both coming to Edmonton in July! It was an honour to give time to this project and as we all went home with all of our fingers and toes I would consider our day a success as well! See the photo and our thanks in the right hand column.

As a board, we want to ensure we continue to add value to the membership with informative business meetings and plenty of networking opportunities.

On behalf of the Edmonton Region Board I hope everyone enjoys the summer and that the weather indeed remains good. I look forward to seeing the fine folks of our industry at future events including the Industry Dinner and CIPHEX Roadshow in October.

Please make sure you follow us on Twitter (@CIPHEdmonton) or join our group on LinkedIn (CIPH Edmonton Region). If you have any feedback please feel free to reach out to me directly or to any of our board members.

                     Ellen Rohr, Keynote Speaker

Is it the Economy?  How to get rich in good times and bad!

Ellen will share her perspective on the industry at large through the lens of her 25 years in the trenches. She’ll offer insights into emerging opportunities, tried-and-evergreen niches…and how to make money no matter what is happening in the economy.

Ellen Rohr – The Plumber’s Wife turned Business Makeover Expert® Once upon a time, Ellen got involved in her husband’s company after his partner died unexpectedly. Boy was she humbled! It seemed like lots of money was moving through the company, but at the end of the month there was never any money left. Thankfully, Ellen found terrific mentors, savvy contractors who taught her how to keep score in business, how to put a simple business plan together, and how to make money.
Ellen started Bare Bones Biz, a venture capital and consulting company in 1995 to help folks of all ages turn their big ideas into successful businesses. Ellen is also a successful franchisor, helping launch a plumbing franchise to 47 locations and $40 million in sales in under 2 years. Ellen is currently the president of Zoom Drain and Sewer, LLC since 2014.
Ellen has appeared on television over 50 times sharing Business Tips. She is also a columnist for Huffington Post, PHC News, and a contributor to many business journals and trade magazines.  She takes ordinarily dry-as-dust business basics and makes them simple and fun.  Ellen is also the author of four business basics books:  Where Did the Money Go?, How Much Should I Charge?, The Bare Bones Biz Plan and  The Weekend Biz Plan.
