PBS LearningMedia: Coming Home from War
Grade Range: 6-8, 9-12
This resource group from PBS LearningMedia utilizes the film and website resources for The Way We Get By, which tells the story of a group of volunteers who have greeted more than 900,000 troops at a tiny airport in Bangor, Maine. Classrooms can use the resources to conduct an investigation that compares and contrasts the homecoming experiences of soldiers who served in World War II, the Vietnam War, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Mysteries of the Deep
Grade Range: 3-5, 6-8, 9-12
In this lesson, students will use math and scale drawing of the submarine as a model from which to draw a full-scale version of the Confederate submarine, the CSS H.L. Hunley.

Songs of War Grade Range: 6-8, 9-12
In this lesson plan from PBS Teachers, students will explore the relationship between real-life events and popular music, focusing on a song written during the U.S.-Mexican War. They will then have the opportunity to write a song from a new perspective and apply this to modern-day conflicts.

Life on the Prairie
Grade Range: 3-6
Visit with a pioneer woman (a naturalist from the Polk County Conservation Board) as she shares how the Iowa landscape has changed and what effects it is having on Iowa wildlife. She will also explain what life was like on the prairie during the 19th century.
