Netherlands (Apr 23, 2012)

Dutch Prime Minister Mark RUTTE resigned Monday triggering snap parliamentary elections for September 12. The fall of RUTTE’s 18-month old government was caused by the refusal of a coalition ally, the right-wing Freedom Party, to support the government’s austerity package.

France (Apr 22, 2012)

French President Nicolas SARKOZY will face Socialist challenger François HOLLANDE after the two candidates moved on from the first round of presidential elections on Sunday. HOLLANDE finished in first place with approximately 28 percent of the vote while SARKOZY finished in second with 27 percent. This was the first election in France’s modern history where the incumbent did not finish in first place during the first round.
