Rosie and Opal, the Elephants of Hope

Spotlight

DESIRAY ROY is Snowlion Rep's most devoted costumer, having gotten raves for her Victorian Dickensian garb in The Christmas Bride as well as her ultra up-to-date teen fashion extravaganza in The Freaks Club. Dezi now takes on the colorful vaudevillian Hackers in The Elephant Piece opening April 11 at Portland Stage studio theater.

Desiray received her BA in theatre in 2011 focusing in Costume/Hair and Makeup Design, dabbling in a bit of acting. Other past costuming credits include student productions of Death and the Maiden by Ariel Dorfman, The Distance From Here by Neil Labute, and the student written and produced Clutter by Megan Tripaldi. Her work was also featured on the University of Southern Maine's main stages in the world premiere of Brian Cimmet's The Spirit of Reindeer, Sam Shepard's
Fool For Love, Anton Chekov's The Bear and
The Proposal, and the U.S. premiere of Airswimming by Charlotte Jones.

Greetings!

How are theatrical shows and elephants alike?  Both cannot continue to exist without our help.  That means, coming to see The Elephant Piece, a marvelous and moving musical that's really about the human race, and if you can, supporting the elephants by attending the benefit performance of The Elephant Piece for Maine's own elephants, Rosie and Opal.  Details below.  Don't miss this opportunity to help these two endangered species!

Sincerely,

THE ELEPHANT PIECE
in rehearsal now, opening April 11

David Arthur Bachrach as BONES, Bartley Mullin as BUTCH, Angelica Phipps as IRIS, and Gabe Walker as PUG rehearse "The Elephant Piece"

Over-the-top props are being gathered, colorful and carnivalesque costumes are being coordinated, lively choreography is being staged - The Elephant Piece rehearsals are in full swing!

This bitingly satirical musical is taking shape for its April 11 opening, and the cast is eager to sing and stomp their way into your hearts in this New England premiere.  New  York's Downtown Express wrote, "Ionesco meets Greenpeace in this effectively disturbing absurdist fable...an eerie, surreal vaudeville song-and-dance revue...this show sings when at its nastiest."

In The Elephant Piece, a roving band of charming miscreants stages a faux "minstrel show," launching the audience on a journey into musical mayhem and absurdist spectacle that ultimately touches the heart and gives hope that our species might just survive its own cheerful destructiveness.  This is a Portland theater event you won't want to miss.

ROSIE AND OPAL ARE
THE ELEPHANTS OF HOPE

Rosie and Opal

Rosie and Opal are Asian elephants who have worked their entire lives in circuses. Over time, they have developed arthritis and other maladies, and they now need specialized medical care, which is what they get every day at HOPE ELEPHANTS. Such expert treatment and the large amounts of food needed to feed these 8,000-pound girls require a steady influx of funds, and Snowlion Rep and the cast of The Elephant Piece are eager to help. Because HOPE ELEPHANTS has successfully developed and applied treatments that have improved Rosie and Opal's quality of life, other injured elephants will benefit from their innovations. Snowlion Rep hopes to raise awareness of the good work that HOPE ELEPHANTS does by hosting a benefit performance.
