Explosion and Fire Damage West Side Home
(14-6114)
September 16, 2014

On Monday, September 15, 2014, at 9:49 pm, members of the Elgin Fire Department (EFD) responded to the 1100 block of Morningside Drive for a report of a house explosion with a fire and victims.

Responding fire companies found a single story residence with a single resident in the front yard. The house had the front and east wall blown out, lying on the ground; along with the majority of the window glass shattered.  There was considerable fire in the structure on the east side and basement. The alarm was upgraded to a 'working fire' at that time.  The first EFD companies arrived within three minutes of dispatch and began care for the resident while attacking the fire on multiple levels.  The fire was brought under control ten minutes later.  A total of ten EFD companies were called to help fight the blaze.  No out of town fire companies were required.

The estimated fire loss was approximately $150,000.00, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.  The Elgin Fire Investigation Team was called out, as well as Commonwealth Edison, Nicor and a board-up service.

The resident was transported to Advocate Sherman Hospital and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. Code Enforcement was notified for follow-up. The building property was secured by the board-up company.
