Elizabeth Monroe's Birthday Celebration

Tea cup
Nicknamed "la belle Americaine" by the French, Elizabeth Monroe was known for her elegance and style. We'll celebrate the June birthday of the lovely Mrs. Monroe with a genteel afternoon tea in the museum garden! Harpist and storyteller Eve Watters will perform a selection of period songs and stories, and interpreters in early-nineteenth-century costume will be on hand to serve tea and answer questions about the style of the times.

Saturday, June 8, from 2 to 4 p.m. Advance registration is required. Tickets are $25/person ($20 for Friends of JMM). To RSVP, call 540/654-1043 or send e-mail

Join us for "Artifacts after Dark" on Wednesday, June 12

Did you know that the James Monroe Museum's collection contains some 1,700 artifacts and 10,000 documents related to James Monroe, his family, and people or events contemporary to him? However, the small physical size of the museum prevents us from being able to display the majority of the collection.

Here is your chance to peek into our closet! On Wednesday, June 12, from 7 to 9 p.m., we'll present a program called "Artifacts after Dark." Curator Jarod Kearney will display a selection of rare and curious objects from the collection, and we'll enjoy a dessert buffet and champagne.

The program will repeat (with different objects on display) on Wednesday, June 26.

Advance registration is required. Tickets are $30/person ($25 for Friends of JMM) per evening. To register, call 540/654-1043 or send e-mail.

"Yoga in the Garden" Continues Saturdays through June

JMM has joined First Lady Michelle Obama's "Let's Move! Museums and Gardens" initiative, becoming the only Fredericksburg-area museum to embrace healthy living by offering family fitness programs on its grounds.

We will offer drop-in yoga classes in our garden every Saturday from 8 to 9 a.m., through June 29. The classes will be taught by Ren Fields and other teachers from Fredericksburg's Healing Arts Yoga.

Classes are $12 each and are open to all ages and skill levels. Join us to connect with nature and get energized for your weekend!

The James Monroe Museum and Memorial Library, located in historic downtown Fredericksburg, Virginia, is the largest repository in the country for artifacts and documents related to the fifth president of the United States. The museum was first opened in 1927 by Monroe descendants as a place to house their own personal collections, which had been handed down through generations of the family. Eventually, the museum and its extensive collections were turned over to the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the museum is now administered by the University of Mary Washington.

The museum belongs to the American Association of Museums, the American Association for State and Local History, and the Virginia Association of Museums. It is also on the National Register of Historic Places and is a National Historic Landmark.
